Review of Project Car Rental

Was a pleasure using Project Car Rental for our trip, Communication was a breeze and staff were friendly and prompt. Unlike some of the counter folk at the other car rental employees at the airport like Avis who seemed disinterested and bored with life. It’s a bit of a walk to get to the car, especially with all the luggage and the cold ! We were travelling with young children so that was a bit of a challenge. Key collection and drop off were easy enough. Big plus that they very flexible with timing since you do all of this yourself. Would highly recommended and will certainly use them again should we return to Iceland.

Review of Ring Car Rental

I loved the car, apparently "the" car brand for tourists in Iceland. Not ideal for the city or towns, but perfect for the countryside. No trouble with pick up at the airport. I ended up upgrading to the full insurance after researching online about the road conditions I might encounter. Glad I did, it made the whole thing a lot easier. Staff was friendly, handed out the required papers and driving guide. No issue dropping off the car at the rental location, and they drove me straight over to the airport. Good service, will likely book with them again!

Renting the Best 4WD & SUVs in Iceland

Renting 4WD and SUVs in Iceland is a popular choice for travelers looking to embark on unforgettable adventures in this ruggedly beautiful Nordic country. Iceland's diverse landscapes, including glaciers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and remote fjords, demand vehicles capable of navigating varying terrains and ever-changing weather conditions.

With a 4WD or SUV, you can confidently explore Iceland's famous Ring Road, venture into the remote Highlands, or navigate the gravel and unpaved F-roads that lead to hidden gems. These vehicles provide the stability, traction, and ground clearance needed to tackle challenging off-road paths while ensuring safety in icy winter conditions.

Many rental agencies offer a wide selection of 4WD and SUV models, from compact options to larger, more luxurious vehicles, accommodating different group sizes and budgets. Whether you're chasing the northern lights, discovering natural hot springs, or simply enjoying the scenic drives, renting a 4WD or SUV in Iceland opens up a world of opportunities for an unforgettable Icelandic adventure.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I rent a 4WD in Iceland?

If you wish to visit the Highlands in summer, you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. In the winter season, a 4WD is a safer option than a 2WD, no matter whether you're traveling on normal roads in the city or further afield. This is due to the ever-changing nature of Icelandic weather, such as snowstorms or icy road conditions. For further advice, consult our guide to rental car sizes in Iceland.

What sort of cars are considered 4x4 or SUV’s?

This category covers larger vehicle models such as Toyota Rav4, Land Rover Defender, and Suzuki Vitara and thus is better suited for more passengers. While some options within this category are 2WD vehicles, others come with 4WD. All vehicles are elevated, making them an ideal choice for traveling on snow or gravel.

Are 4x4 vehicles suitable for driving around Iceland in all seasons?

Yes, vehicles within this category are suitable whether you're traveling in the warm summer or in the cold winter months.

Do 4x4 vehicles in Iceland have tire chains?

No, it is illegal for vehicles to have tire chains in Iceland. However, after November 1st, all rental vehicles in Iceland are provided with studded winter tires.

Can I go into the highlands in this type of car?

Some vehicles within this category are suitable for traveling in the Highlands, while others are not. Each listed vehicle is marked specifically to show whether it can travel on Highland roads. Understand that taking an unsuitable vehicle into the highlands will likely void any purchased insurance and make you liable to pay for a damaged undercarriage or suspension.

Do I need a 4WD in winter?

While not mandatory, we highly recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive vehicle if you travel to Iceland between October and March. Even if you stay on main roads, it’s safer than a smaller and lighter 2WD with lesser capabilities.

Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle at the airport in Iceland?

Yes, many rental providers are at Keflavik airport (KEF Airport) and Reykjavik airport, where you can pick up your four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Are 4x4 vehicles suitable for a self-drive tour in Iceland?

Yes, a self-drive tour is a great way to have a 4x4 adventure in Iceland’s countryside, whether in summer or winter. Your accommodation and activities in different regions of the country are prebooked on self-drive tours. All you have to worry about is driving from place to place in your four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Can 4x4 vehicles drive on Iceland's F roads?

Yes, the only way to drive on Iceland's F roads (the F stands for "Fjall," the Icelandic word for mountain) is on a 4WD or AWD vehicle. These roads can be found in Iceland's remote Highlands and are closed off during winter.

What are the most popular 4WD vehicles and SUVs to rent in Iceland?

Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny are our most popular smaller-sized 4x4 vehicles. For medium-sized 4x4 vehicles, the Toyota Rav4 and Kia Sportage are the most popular. The Toyota Land Cruiser is the most popular SUV among our customers. All these vehicles handle well on snow and can drive on Iceland's gravel roads, as well as the infamous F-roads of Iceland.

What is included in my 4x4 rental in Iceland?

Each independent rental has a different setup, so please read the description carefully and go over the ‘included’ section before finalizing the booking. It is common for the rental company to include additional insurance or GPS devices.
All cars come with unlimited mileage and CDW insurance, in line with the law in Iceland. The CDW insurance covers damages the renter might cause to other vehicles and items. It also provides compensation for harm to individuals but does not cover damages to the rental vehicle.

Are there any specific requirements for renting a 4WD or SUV in Iceland?

Most rental agencies in Iceland require renters to be at least 21 years old and have a valid driver's license. Some agencies may have a higher age requirement for specific vehicle categories. For further information, read our advice on renting a car in Iceland.

Can I rent child seats or GPS navigation with my 4WD or SUV rental?

Yes, most rental companies offer optional extras like child seats, GPS navigation, and Wi-Fi devices for an additional fee. Be sure to request these in advance if needed.

Are there any additional fees or taxes I should be aware of when renting a 4WD or SUV in Iceland?

It's essential to ask about any additional fees, such as airport surcharges, fuel charges, or taxes, to avoid surprises when renting your vehicle. Always read the rental contract thoroughly before signing.

What should I do in case of an emergency or breakdown while driving a rented 4WD or SUV in Iceland?

Contact the rental agency immediately for assistance and follow their instructions. Iceland has emergency services, and it's essential to have a phone with good coverage for communication. Be prepared with basic emergency supplies as well.
