Make a Stop in Vik on the South Coast!
If you're planning to explore some of the countryside outside Reykjavik, it's likely you'll be traveling the South Coast, or at least a part of it! It's where the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls are located, along with Reynisfjara black sand beach and DC-3 Plane Wreck on Solheimasandur beach.
You can go on South Coast tours to see the major sights but if you can, exploring the region freely with a rental car is quite the adventure. It's such a beautiful area to explore!
One location that you should take the time to visit in the area is the town of Vik. It's just a 12-minute drive further than Reynisfjara beach, and it's the best place for a rest stop. There are some fantastic restaurants in Vik, and if you're taking a longer time to explore the region, it can be a great idea to stay a night or two before continuing your travels.
Check out our video from our time in the town and find ideas for your Vik accommodation, delicious local food to try, and fun stuff to do while there!
It's common for visitors to do a day trip to the South Coast, only exploring the Southwestern part of it, and generally ending with Reynisfjara beach. However, there are some truly amazing places further Southeast, such as the Fjadrargljufur canyon, Skaftafell Nature Reserve, and, of course, the stunning Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon and Diamond Beach!
There are many hidden places to stop for short hikes, which makes it amazing to travel at your own pace. Vik can be a very convenient base for thoroughly exploring the whole South Coast, as it's exactly in between Reykjavik and the Jokulsarlon glacier lagoon, with a two-and-a-half-hour drive in either direction. Whether it's to stay a night or for a simple rest stop, make sure to stop by this charming South Coast town!
