Skessuhorn Mountain Location and How to Get There

Skessuhorn mountain lies on a small peninsula between the stunning Borgarfjordur and Hvalfjordur fjords. It's just 11.5 miles (18.5 kilometers) south of Borgarnes town, an excellent gateway into the Snaefellsnes Peninsula. Skessuhorn is 53 miles (86 kilometers) north of Reykjavik and, therefore, an easy trip from Iceland's capital city. 

From Borgarnes, head South on the Ring Road and cross the Borgarfjordur fjord. Turn left onto Road 50 once you're across the fjord, then right onto Road 507. A little way along Road 507, you'll turn right onto a minor road, and the hike up Skessuhorn starts further along here.

Skessuhorn Mountain Features and Folklore

Skessuhorn is a distinctive triangular shape with steep rocky slopes that rise sharply from the surrounding landscape. Due to its iconic shape resembling the Swiss Matterhorn, it's commonly called the "Matterhorn of Iceland." 

Striking rock formations in Iceland are often said to be the petrified remain of trolls who suffered the sun's harsh fate. Skessuhorn mountain, "Troll Woman's Peak," is one example. According to Icelandic folklore, a female troll used to sit on Skessuhorn mountain looking for people to catch below.

Hiking up Skessuhorn Mountain
