Guide to Iceland
Address
Helgafell is a farm and church site, by a 73 m hill of the same name, and located on Thorsnes, south of Stykkisholmur on Snaefellsnes peninsula. It was a large farm for centuries and had a monastery in the Middle Ages.
In the settlement age, a temple in honour of the thundergod Thor was located at the foot of the hill. Also, according to Laxdaela Saga, heroine Gudrun Osvifursdottir is buried by the hill. In pagan times the mountain was indeed said to be the home for dead people.
