Description

Embark on an unforgettable 2-day winter adventure along Iceland’s South Coast, where glaciers, waterfalls, and black sand beaches create a landscape like no other. This small group tour is perfect for travelers seeking scenic highlights and unique seasonal experiences like ice caving, with expert guidance, comfortable transport, and accommodation all included.

The South Coast of Iceland is one of the country’s most visually striking regions, where fiery volcanic terrain meets icy glaciers and roaring Atlantic waves. During winter, the area transforms into a serene and dramatic wonderland, offering surreal beauty and fewer crowds.

Over two days, you’ll explore iconic locations in the region, including the world-famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Your winter journey in Iceland includes a comfortable ride in a modern minibus, led by a professional English-speaking guide. This guide shares local insights monitors on conditions for spontaneous photo stops or aurora hunting.

All transportation from Reykjavik, one night’s accommodation in a countryside hotel with a private bathroom, and breakfast are included. The small group size ensures a more personal and flexible experience throughout the tour.

Some of the South Coast’s most iconic features are its waterfalls and coastal cliffs. Seljalandsfoss offers a unique path behind its falling curtain of water, while Skogafoss impresses with its powerful drop and misty rainbows.

A visit to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach completes the experience, where towering basalt columns, dramatic sea stacks, and crashing Atlantic waves create a striking natural scene.

Another highlight of this winter tour is Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Located at the edge of Vatnajokull National Park, this glacial lake is filled with massive icebergs that have calved from a nearby glacier tongue. The calm blue waters provide a surreal setting for photography and wildlife sightings, including curious seals swimming between the ice.

One of the most extraordinary experiences offered on this tour is the opportunity to visit a natural ice cave. For those who wish to upgrade, a specially modified Super Jeep takes you off-road to the glacier’s edge, where a certified glacier guide leads you safely through tunnels of electric blue ice sculpted over centuries.

It’s a rare chance to explore deep inside Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajokull, in one of the few regions where ice caves form naturally each winter.

When night falls, the adventure doesn’t end. Your countryside accommodation is ideally situated away from city lights, offering the best possible conditions to view the northern lights. If the skies are clear and solar activity is present, your guide will help you chase down this unforgettable natural light show.

From the crashing waves at Reynisfjara Beach to the floating icebergs of Jokulsarlon and the potential for glowing auroras overhead, this 2-day winter tour brings together the best of Iceland’s winter magic. Optional ice caving, expert-led exploration, and breathtaking scenery make this the perfect short escape for nature lovers and adventurous souls.

Don't miss this opportunity to explore Iceland’s South Coast at its most magical, where winter landscapes, glaciers, and northern lights await. Check availability now by choosing a date.

Day 1

Day 1 - South Coast Highlights & Northern Lights

The journey begins with a morning departure from Reykjavik at 8:00 AM, with pickups arranged from selected locations throughout the city. Once all travelers are on board, the adventure heads southeast along Iceland’s iconic Route 1, also known as the Ring Road.

In winter, the South Coast transforms into a dramatic wonderland, with frozen landscapes, snow-dusted cliffs, and icy formations around the waterfalls.

Roads are maintained for safe travel, and the region’s natural highlights take on an otherworldly appearance beneath low winter light. It's a time of quiet beauty, perfect for photography and peaceful exploration.

The first stop is Seljalandsfoss, a striking waterfall that plunges from 197 feet (60 meters). A narrow path circles behind the cascade, allowing for a unique and immersive experience of walking behind the water curtain.

Those who take the short trail are rewarded with incredible photographic angles and a chance to witness the power of nature up close, often with a misty rainbow in tow.

From here, the journey continues to Skogafoss, a waterfall equally impressive in height but even more powerful in volume. The roar of the water and the shimmering mist often create double rainbows on sunny days.

Adventurous visitors can climb the stairway to a platform overlooking the falls and the nearby coastline. The views from the top are wide-ranging, stretching across farmlands and the southern lowlands.

By evening, the group arrives at a countryside hotel nestled far from city lights. It’s chosen specifically to enhance the possibility of seeing the northern lights.

During aurora season (September to April), the guide will check the forecast and share updates. Depending on conditions, guests may receive a wake-up call if the aurora borealis appears during the night.

This day sets the tone for the journey ahead, blending captivating nature, scenic exploration, and the potential for magical moments under the Arctic sky.

Day 2

Day 2 - Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, Diamond Beach, & Ice Cave Option

The second day begins with a journey farther east into the heart of Vatnajokull National Park, a vast protected area known for its glaciers, volcanoes, and breathtaking landscapes. This region is home to the largest glacier in Europe and one of Iceland’s most iconic natural wonders, Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon.

Fed by meltwater from the Breidamerkurjokull glacier tongue, this expansive glacial lake is filled with floating icebergs in a constantly shifting display of size, color, and form. The lagoon’s serene surface reflects the surrounding mountains, creating a mesmerizing scene that feels almost otherworldly.

Even in winter, Jokulsarlon remains a striking and dynamic destination. Icebergs slowly drift through the icy waters, occasionally creaking and splitting as they move. The lagoon’s cinematic beauty has earned it a starring role in films like James Bond: Die Another Day and Tomb Raider, making it one of Iceland’s most recognizable and visually stunning locations.

A short walk from the lagoon brings visitors to Diamond Beach, where broken fragments of icebergs are washed ashore by the Atlantic Ocean. These crystal-like ice chunks rest on the black volcanic sand, glistening like gems under the Icelandic sky.

The dramatic contrast between the dark sand and ice makes this beach one of the most photographed spots in the country.

For those joining the optional ice cave tour, the adventure continues at a nearby base camp. There, a certified glacier guide will provide essential safety gear and lead the group into the icy wilderness aboard a rugged Super Jeep.

After a scenic off-road drive, visitors step inside a naturally formed ice cave, a dazzling world of deep blue walls, shaped by meltwater streams during the winter months. The guide will share fascinating details about how these formations develop and ensure a safe and enriching experience throughout the visit.

Later in the day, the tour heads to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach near Vík, renowned for its roaring waves, geometric basalt columns, and towering sea stacks.

From there, the return journey to Reykjavik offers one final stretch of Iceland’s awe-inspiring coastal scenery.
