Eyjafjörður Fjord in North Iceland - Historical Churches

On my travels in Iceland, I visit all the churches I encounter - and to visit some of them, I travel long distances. There are several historic churches in Eyjafjörður fjord, the longest fjord in North Iceland. In this travel blog, I am going to show you 6 of them: the church at Grund, Saurbæjarkirkja (turf church), Hólakirkja, Munkaþverárkirkja, the church at Möðruvellir, and Kaupangskirkja. The Nonnahús museum is my favourite museum in Akureyri and a hidden gem in North Iceland's capital city. In this travel blog, I am going to tell you about Nonni and show you inside his former childhood home. I have such fond memories of visiting this museum as a child, and I greet Nonni every time I travel up north to Akureyri. Just outside of Akureyri town in North Iceland, you will find a Christmas House - Jólahúsið - in Hrafnagil in Eyjafjörður fjord. It is open year-round, and stepping into it feels like entering a magical world. Akureyri is the capital of North Iceland. This magical city of the North is located by the sea in Eyjafjörður fjord. I have been writing a series of travel blogs about things to do in Eyjafjörður and want to dedicate this one to my favourite city, Akureyri. In this travel blog, I am going to tell you about well-known Icelandic folklore, which tells us about the Deacon of Dark River - Djákninn á Myrká. It is a ghost story, and I have always found this one to be particularly scary.  This ghost story took place in the Hörgárdalur valley in North Iceland. Hörgárdalur is a valley leading to Eyjafjörður fjord, Iceland's longest fjord. So I found it fitting to add it to my series of travel blogs on the beautiful Eyjafjörður fjord. Gásir is a very special place in Eyjafjörður fjord. It is hard to believe it now, but Gásir was the main trading post in Northern Iceland in the Middle Ages. It remained a trading place for 4 centuries, from the 11th to the 15th centuries. During the summertime, a village (a camp) formed as the ships arrived and departed. Gásir is unique, as it is the only place where so many antiquities from a medieval trading post can be found. Eyjafjörður fjord is a beautiful fjord in North Iceland. It is about 60 km long from the mouth to the bottom of the fjord, which makes it the longest fjord in North Iceland. In this lovely fjord, you will find many interesting places to visit, so I have dedicated seven travel blogs to the sights and activities in Eyjafjörður. Eyjafjörður is at the edge of the Arctic Circle, and there are two beautiful islands here: Hrísey Island and Grímsey Island, but through the latter of the two, the Arctic Circle runs.
