Take an adventure of a lifetime with this diving experience in Iceland that takes you beneath the North Atlantic and into the lava-formed fissure of Bjarnagja. Perfect for certified divers, this journey through the Reykjanes Peninsula lets you explore kelp forests and discover the volcanic underwater world of Iceland.
This diving tour in Iceland includes two guided dives in some of Iceland’s most unique underwater settings. With only three divers per instructor, the experience feels safe and personal, and all equipment is provided for your time exploring the North Atlantic coast and the lava fissure of Bjarnagja.
Your day starts with a pickup in Reykjavik and a drive to the Reykjanes Peninsula, about an hour away. On the way, you pass new lava fields where steam sometimes rises from the ground. You’ll also see the fishing town of Grindavik with its protective lava walls and ride past the Blue Lagoon.
When you reach the first site, your guide provides a detailed briefing and helps you gear up with high-quality diving equipment. Depending on the tides and conditions, you may start at Bjarnagja Fissure or at the ocean site of Gardur.
Bjarnagja Fissure in Reykjanes is a lava gorge about 59 feet (18 meters) deep, where a sunken boat rests at the bottom as a surprising highlight in the clear water. The mix of fresh and salt water creates unusual visibility and gives you the chance to spot small marine life.
Your second dive takes place at Gardur, an ocean site that showcases the coastal life of the North Atlantic. Here, swaying kelp forests shelter colorful algae, flounders resting on the sandy floor, and small creatures like nudibranchs.
You may even spot a wolf fish peeking out from the rocks with its prehistoric-looking head. The cool water sharpens your senses, and every turn brings new details to notice, from soft corals to the bright movement of fish darting past.
Each dive lasts around 30 to 40 minutes with a maximum depth of 59 feet (18 meters). After surfacing, your guide offers hot chocolate and cookies so you can warm up and share impressions of what you have seen. Between dives, there is a short drive to the second site, where you will repeat the briefing and preparation before entering the water again.
Once both dives are complete, you return to Reykjavik, with the option to stop at the Blue Lagoon along the way. If you choose this, you can enjoy its warm, mineral-rich waters at your own expense, and you will need to arrange your own transport back to the city afterward.
Experience the best of diving in Iceland with this unique combo that takes you from the North Atlantic coast to the lava fissure of Bjarnagja on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Check availability now by choosing a date.
