Half day tour horseback riding in Reykjavík

Have you checked out the Icelandic horses? If you've never been horseback riding before, the Icelandic horses are a good starting point since they are smaller than other horses. I went on a half day tour with Reykjavík Riding Center last week. It was really sunny and warm and this was a really fun tour. The guy that runs the place was super friendly and chatty and always making jokes. After a bit of coffee we headed out for a short ride, only 1,5 hours on the horse. If it would've been much longer then I would probably have gotten quite stiff muscles the following day since it's been so lon

Iceland is the safest country in the world

According to the Global Peace Index Iceland is the safest country in the world, for the 5th time in a row. They first started releasing the list of the most peaceful countries in 2007, when Iceland was not taken into account since some reliable data was missing, according to Wikipedia. From 2011, Iceland has been number one at the list every single year! (In 2010 it was second, 2009 it was fourth and in 2008 it was number 1). So what makes Iceland so safe? This big country, with a small population of roughly 325 thousand people has no army, a murder rate of 0-1,5 per year, virtually no vio

Iceland's Independence Day

June 17th is the national day of Iceland, where Icelanders celebrate their independence from Denmark. The country bursts with national pride, and festivities can be found in every town throughout the country. June 17th holds a special place in the hearts of Icelanders as the day is filled with cultural festivities and national pride. Its formal name is "Thjodhatidardagurinn" in Icelandic, which translates directly to "the day of the nation's celebration," but it's most commonly referred to by the date June 17th. This is a great time for families to spend quality time together, as there are ma

RuPaul's Drag Race in Reykjavík!

RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition TV series that is having a show in Iceland TONIGHT! In 2014, TV Guide Magazine ranked the series as one of its 20 best television series picks of the year. My facebook feed has pretty much been filled with information about this show, as my friends are super excited to go and witness this in Gamla Bíó at 11pm tonight. (I'm sadly in London so I'll miss out). You can still get tickets to RuPaul's Drag Race here for 6500 ISK or a VIP ticket for 8900 ISK (then you get to meet the queens before the show, show up at 9pm). Tonight's performan

Harpa: Reykjavík's Concert and Conference Hall

Have you been to Reykjavík's concert and conference hall, Harpa? Besides concerts and conferences events include gigs, theatre, stand-up comedy, musicals, art exhibitions, music festivals and the building has even been used as a screen to play the computer game Pong on it! Harpa was very controversial and its history spans decades of years. The first suggestion of building a concert hall in Iceland came in 1880 but it wasn't until more than a hundred years later, in the 1990's that things started happening.  After years of location and design suggestions (dating back to the early 90's) the

Solar eclipse in Iceland on 20th of March 2015!

On Friday the 20th of March spring equinox occurs in Iceland. On the same day, there will be a supermoon. This Supermoon will ALSO block the sun and there will be a solar eclipse! I have actually never seen a solar eclipse in my life, so I'm super excited about this one! :) I'm fascinated about the beauty of this universe and our solar system and can't wait to witness this next week! This solar eclipse will be seen from all over Europe (I'll be watching it in the UK) as well as northern and eastern Asia and northern and western Africa. The further north you are, the greater the eclipse. I

Sex and Nudity

Sex and Nudity

I have noticed that perceptions of sex and nudity in Iceland are a bit odd to some people.  So I went out last night with a group of friends and was talking to an English friend of mine that suggested I should write a blog about how open Icelandic people are about sex. (Which is obviously a great idea because everyone is going to want to read about that – and I have so much to say on the topic!) ;)  This said friend has been to Iceland a couple of times (as well as pretty much everywhere else in the world) and he was amused when he was there with myself and my Icelandic female friend and w

Dance in Reykjavík

What's the dance scene in Iceland like? Where are dance classes held? Which dance type is common in Iceland? Where can you watch dance performances? Are there any famous Icelandic dancers?  My Dance Background  In no way am I an expert, but I myself dance Argentinian tango which I mainly learned in Buenos Aires and have dabbled with various other forms of dance, in both Iceland and London. The styles I've had a go at include belly dancing, hip hop, african dance, zumba, ballroom, salsa, samba, contemporary and most recently pole dancing and Beyoncé style. When I just started dating my
