Logistical note - this is two separate tours, so you drive out for the lava tunnel, return to BSI, and then board a separate bus with a different group for the Golden Circle tour in the afternoon (12:30pm departure). Everything was managed well and on schedule, but that part wasn't entirely clear from this booking, so just don't get nervous when the day is only halfway done and the bus is already returning to town. That said, both sections of the tour were very cool. The lava tunnel requires some sure footing but isn't very strenuous, and our guide was fantastic about stopping in several spots to explain the geology and different features. Be sure to check out the side tunnel on the way out. The driver for this portion didn't act as a guide, so the drive was just quiet (not a bad thing for a morning trip). The Golden Circle guide was very good (we had Marianne from Reykjavik Excursions). She gave great information throughout the drive, even over some of the longer stretches, and pointed out interesting features like the tectonic plate split around Thingvellir as we drove through.
