Review of A Car Rental

Firstly, I would like to say a big thank you to ACarRental, especially to Ivar who handled the entire car rental process. His service is impeccable and professionalism unmatched. This is by far the best car rental company that we have encountered thus far, even better than the big companies out there. We were on a family trip in Iceland for a week in March (Winter) and Ivar sent us an email before we reach Iceland to coordinate our pickup from the airport / hotel (which is unheard of by any car rental company that we have engaged) which is a major plus point. Secondly, he went through the procedures with us and guided us through the process should anything happen during our trip (emergency numbers, websites for road conditions, even gave us his personal number for urgent matters). Lastly, on the day that we left Iceland, after returning the vehicle, he offered to send us to the airport so that we wouldn’t have to book our own transport. This is excellent service and we would definitely rent from them again in the future when we revisit Iceland. We would strongly recommend anyone coming to Iceland to check them out

Review of Blue Car Rental

The car rental was great and very friendly. The car was good and had everything we needed and the agency was very informative on things to think about or keep in mind. I got the full insurance package with it, which I do definitely recommend. I was a little unsure where to find the car rental place but the airport has staff walking around to help you and the parking isn't all that far from the terminal, only about 3 minutes walking. The return was easy too although I do wish they would've come out to check the car (both at check in and check out) instead of sending an online form. Otherwise definitely recommend, a great car, easy to drive and for a reasonable price.

Frequently asked questions

Why should I rent a 4WD in Iceland?

If you wish to visit the Highlands in summer, you will need a four-wheel-drive vehicle. In the winter season, a 4WD is a safer option than a 2WD, no matter whether you're traveling on normal roads in the city or further afield. This is due to the ever-changing nature of Icelandic weather, such as snowstorms or icy road conditions.

What sort of cars are considered 4x4 or SUV’s?

This category covers larger vehicle models such as Toyota Rav4, Land Rover Defender, and Suzuki Vitara and thus is better suited for more passengers. While some options within this category are 2WD vehicles, others come with 4WD. All vehicles are elevated, making them an ideal choice for traveling on snow or gravel.

Are 4x4 vehicles suitable for driving around Iceland in all seasons?

Yes, vehicles within this category are suitable whether you're traveling in the warm summer or in the cold winter months.

Do 4x4 vehicles in Iceland have tire chains?

No, it is illegal for vehicles to have tire chains in Iceland. However, after November 1st, all rental vehicles in Iceland are provided with studded winter tires.

Can I go into the highlands in this type of car?

Some vehicles within this category are suitable for traveling in the Highlands, while others are not. Each listed vehicle is marked specifically to show whether it can travel on Highland roads. Understand that taking an unsuitable vehicle into the highlands will likely void any purchased insurance and make you liable to pay for a damaged undercarriage or suspension.

Do I need a 4WD in winter?

While not mandatory, we highly recommend renting a 4-wheel-drive vehicle if you travel to Iceland between October and March. Even if you stay on main roads, it’s safer than a smaller and lighter 2WD with lesser capabilities.

Can I pick up my 4x4 vehicle at the airport in Iceland?

Yes, many rental providers are at Keflavik airport (KEF Airport) and Reykjavik airport, where you can pick up your four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Are 4x4 vehicles suitable for a self-drive tour in Iceland?

Yes, a self-drive tour is a great way to have a 4x4 adventure in Iceland’s countryside, whether in summer or winter. Your accommodation and activities in different regions of the country are prebooked on self-drive tours. All you have to worry about is driving from place to place in your four-wheel-drive vehicle.

Can 4x4 vehicles drive on Iceland's F roads?

Yes, the only way to drive on Iceland's F roads (the F stands for "Fjall," the Icelandic word for mountain) is on a 4WD or AWD vehicle. These roads can be found in Iceland's remote Highlands and are closed off during winter.

What are the most popular 4WD vehicles and SUVs to rent in Iceland?

Dacia Duster and Suzuki Jimny are our most popular smaller-sized 4x4 vehicles. For medium-sized 4x4 vehicles, the Toyota Rav4 and Kia Sportage are the most popular. The Toyota Land Cruiser is the most popular SUV among our customers. All these vehicles handle well on snow and can drive on Iceland's gravel roads.

What is included in my 4x4 rental in Iceland?

Each independent rental has a different setup, so please read the description carefully and go over the ‘included’ section before finalizing the booking. It is common for the rental company to include additional insurance or GPS devices.

All cars come with unlimited mileage and CDW insurance, in line with the law in Iceland. The CDW insurance covers damages the renter might cause to other vehicles and items. It also provides compensation for harm to individuals but does not cover damages to the rental vehicle.
