Hiking and Outdoor Gear at Fjallakofinn
Fjallakofinn stocks technical equipment from established outdoor brands, with gear suited to Iceland's easy and challenging trails, as well as its glaciers. The same lineup covers skiing and snowboarding and gear for some of Iceland's biggest outdoor adventures.
The hiking section includes boots such as Scarpa Mescalito and Ribelle models, while outerwear includes technical shell jackets like the Arc'teryx Beta SL and Patagonia clothing and equipment.
You can ask the staff for help choosing and fitting boots, outerwear, and other technical gear. This can be particularly useful when preparing for Iceland's wet, windy, and changeable conditions, where footwear and waterproof layers need to work on gravel trails and rough lava terrain.
Outdoor Gear Rentals at Fjallakofinn
Fjallakofinn rents out gear in three packages built for mountain travel.
-
Mountain package: crampons, an ice axe, and a climbing harness
-
Avalanche safety package: a transceiver, a shovel, and a probe
-
Ski touring package: backcountry skis with skins, boots, and poles
Each rental runs on a 24-hour basis, with extra days charged separately. The store can also be a convenient place to pick up additional gear after arriving in Iceland if the weather or planned activities call for something extra.
Outdoor Gear Repairs at Fjallakofinn

Fjallakofinn runs two repair services out of the Hallarmuli store. One covers footwear, clothing, and general outdoor equipment. A separate workshop handles bike repairs.
This is useful for anyone who needs a repair during a longer trip around Iceland, as well as local customers looking to extend the life of their gear or bike.

History of Fjallakofinn

Fjallakofinn started as a tiny 17-square-meter shop in Hafnarfjordur. After more than 20 years of growth, the business moved to its current location at Hallarmuli in Reykjavik.
Halldór "Dóri" Hreinsson and Jón Ingi Sigvaldason opened Fjallakofinn in 2004, about two years after the bankruptcy of Nanoq, then Iceland's leading outdoor retailer, left a gap in the market. Dóri had already spent 17 years working in outdoor retail, starting in 1987, before opening Fjallakofinn in 2004.
Today, Dóri runs the store with business partners Hilmar Már Aðalsteinsson and Jón Heiðar Andrésson. The showroom became one of Reykjavik's popular outdoor stores, carrying a wide range of equipment for hiking, climbing, skiing, and other activities.
