Frequently Asked Questions

About Biking Tours in Iceland

Cycling provides for an incredible way of experiencing Iceland's beautiful landscapes, and whether you are a novice cycler or a devout biking enthusiast, you will find options for cycling all across the country. Biking tours refer to any tours conducted on a bicycle, be it motorised or otherwise, as well as bike rentals.

1. When is the best time of the year to take a biking tour in Iceland?

The best time to take a biking tour is during the spring and summer months. Winter will see the roads covered with a blanket of snow and possible snowstorms.

2. What should I wear for a biking tour in Iceland?

It is advised that you bring with you a mixture of clothing to suit the day’s activities. Traditional lycra wear and padded pants are an excellent recommendation, as are sturdy shoes and sunglasses. Bring warm clothing for later hikes or stops.

3. What shall I bring with me on a biking tour?

Make sure to bring bottled water, light and energy driven snacks, your camera and, of course, a sense of adventure. For longer biking tours, such as around the country you’ll need to bring 1-2 days worth of food and camping gear.

4. What will I see on a biking tour around Reykjavik?

Amongst the Reykjavík sites visited are the University of Iceland campus, the Nordic House, the iconic church Hallgrímskirkja, the Parliament building, Reykjavík's Old Harbour and Lake Tjörnin.

5. What are the most popular areas for bike tours in Iceland?

There are a great number of regions popular with cyclists, including but not limited to Reykjanes Peninsula, Þingvellir National Park, Landmannalaugar, Reykjavík and Akureyri.

6. Are there any long distance cycling routes in Iceland?

Some long-distance cyclists choose to bike the entirety of the ring road (Road 1), though this requires a lot of prior experience and knowledge. Aside from the Ring Road, there are no major long-distance routes.

7. Is it possible to rent bikes in Iceland?

Yes, there are bike rentals in most large towns.

8. Can I access the Highlands of Iceland all year round?

No, the Highlands are only open in the summer months.

9. Are there bicycle repair shops outside of Reykjavik?

Bicycle repair shops outside of Reykjavík are few and far between but they can be found in Akureyri, Selfoss and Dalvík.

10. What is the emergency contact number in Iceland in case of an accident?

To contact the emergency services in Iceland, call the number 112. There is also an emergency app that is downloadable to your phone called 112 Iceland.

I feel awful that i can't remember my tour guide's name; I think it was Paula (blonde, originally from poland). She was wonderful - friendly, fun, knowledgeable and overall great company! It was a pleasure to have spent the day with her on this action packed tour. Itinerary was great - a full day of sights and challenges. The only disappointing part was that the tour was advertised to include a visit to a geothermic pool. Unfortunately there was no mention that the geothermic pool stop isn't offered in September. And there wasn't any substitute. Kinda bummed about but overall still a great time. Sites are unbelievable. Bike ride was fun (even in the rain) and the glacier hike was a great experience. Even without the geothermal pool I still highly recommend - well worth it! And you'll sleep like a rock when you get back to your hotel.

Going on this tour was absolutely amazing! We were celebrating our 25th Wedding Anniversary in Iceland. Our tour guide, "Magic" Mike was knowledgeable, friendly, outgoing, and VERY energetic! He knows his stuff! He was able to accommodate slower people (like me ...2 hip replacements) as well as keep up with/exceed those with excellent athletic abilities (my husband!) We thoroughly enjoyed this tour and the sights we got to see. However we were disappointed by the fact that the title of the whole tour mentions a visit to a geothermic pool, and yet come to find out that even though we paid the full price, the pool visit does not occur between Oct-April and so we did not get to go there. And BECAUSE of my surgeries this was why we chose to go on this tour, so we could soak in the pool. Nothing else was offered as a replacement for that part of the excursion. So we were VERY DISAPPOINTED and felt it was false advertising. We should have paid a lower price for the "off season" and I'm going to call and ask for a refund of some sort. But everything else was amazing! Thank you Mike!

Definitely the best tour we did while in Iceland. The tour was catered to our group and all of the activities were astounding. I loved that our tour guide let us go over the edge of the crevice while in the glacier and even stopped at a remote waterfall on the way home. He also stopped for us to see the northern lights when just two days before we had gone on the northern lights tour and were disappointed. This tour was very active though worth it. I would suggest this tour for anyone up to a challenge and wanting to see the highlights of the south coast! Thanks "Gummy" for everything!

Best tour ever with the best guide in Iceland! Our guide David made this experience unique and amazing. He told us awesome stories about Iceland and Icelandic culture. I had a great experience in Iceland and this tour was the best part of my trip. I will definitely come back to Iceland and book more tours with Troll Expedition!

That was my greatest experience in Iceland. We went to the extremely beautiful glacier, the dc plane, cave and some waterfall. Even tough the guide did not take us to the hot spring due to the bad weather, he took us to a hidden waterfall that we can go to the bottom of the fall, so we could experience the water fall on our face directly . The guide, chris, is very kind and professional, who explained everything very detailed and told us lots of information about Iceland . I highly recommend this tour to all the traveler who want to have amazing experience in Iceland.

We traveled with troll expeditions on the best day of our entire trip! It was exhausting (lava caves, glacier hike, bike to plane crash, and more) but such an amazing adventure! The tour guide was fantastic - knowledgeable, friendly and fun

Fantastic tour today. The South Elements tour is definitely a long day but it is an experience that I will never forget. Our tour guide Oddur was funny, kind and patient. I highly recommend this tour if you want to see alot of stuff in one day. The tour bus picked us up at 8am, I got home at 10:30pm. Although the tour does make a few stops at gas stations for food and bathroom breaks. Be prepared with your own snacks and water bottle. I would also suggest bringing a change of clothes because you will get sweaty (the good kind of sweat!). You will also need a swim suit and a towel. Dress in layers because it is colder on the glacier hike but when you ride the "fat bikes" to the Sólheimasandur Plane Crash you will get hot! We also visited 3 water falls, a geothermal pool and a cave. I am exhausted but very satisfied!

Absolutely amazing experience ! As an Icelander living abroad I came here with my American boyfriend and his mother and I could not be more excited about this tour and the phenomenal job trolli tours did of representing Iceland. David did an absolute amazing job at showing us some of icelands most beautiful places in an adventurous and interesting way. Highly recommend to anyone looking for once in a lifetime experience! Takk fyrir alveg magnaðan dag, það er æðislegt að vera túristi á Íslandi!

HIGHLY recommend this tour, ended up being one of the most epic and unforgettable days of my trip. Oddur was the guide for my tour a few weeks ago. He was great, knowledgable and increasingly playful. And he went through the extra effort to get our emails and compile a group picture album which made things so much easier. We played an array of icelandic music as our roadtrip soundtrack which set the mood perfectly and the activities we did were SO beautiful and very hands on which made it more fun. The entire day requires a lot of energy but its so worth it and you're doing so many things you hardly notice time. Honestly one of the best, most fun packed, inspiring, playful days of my time in Iceland. Must do!

Though there is a lot packed into this day of adventures, the time flew by. I loved all of the different activities and experienced several once-in-a-lifetime moments. This tour is for those that want to get physical, be on the move and see Iceland up close and personal. Our tour guide, David, was knowledgeable, fun and gave everyone the confidence to join in and participate. I would highly recommend this tour!

This is the best tour and one of the most exciting days of my life. I went with my teenage son and he also had a great time. Our tour guide, Sigga, was definetly the reason that makes this tour so great. Her incredible personality, pasion for adventure, information and stories about Icelandic culture made this tour just perfect. I will highly recommend this tour. If the only reason you have to go to Iceland is this tour, it worth it!

Bike and Bath

It's so worth taking this tour to see the behind-the-scenes of Myvatn. Elizabeth was so knowledgeable and personable, and I loved hearing about the history of the region, the baking traditions and then relaxing with a nice soak in the Myvatn Nature Baths at the end of the tour.
