The Northern Lights for Dummies

I'm going to dispel some myths around the Northern Lights, and give you some VERY SIMPLE and VERY EFFECTIVE tips on how to see the Northern Lights, when to see the Northern Lights and where to see the Northern Lights. Expect all the dumb, and maybe not so dumb, questions out there to be answered. Can I see the Northern Lights tonight? Can I see the Northern Lights in June? The Northern Lights are not that strong! Are the Northern Lights really that green? It's not possible to see the Northern Lights over Reykjavík. Exactly where, and what time should I be to see the Northern Lights with bri

Iceland is the Smallest Nation EVER to Participate at the World Cup!

Iceland just became the smallest nation in the world EVER to make it to the World Cup! With Iceland's win over Kosovo on the 9th of October 2017, Iceland guaranteed it's place at the 2018 World Cup in football in Russia. Iceland's World Cup Match Dates in 2018 16 June 2018: Argentina - Iceland 22 June 2018: Nigeria - Iceland 26 June 2018: Iceland - Croatia For anyone that doesn't understand why all Icelanders, including those that don't care so much about football, are currently jumping for joy, let me break it down a little. Iceland currently has a population of about 335 thous

Will Iceland's Football Team Make it to the World Cup?!

Tonight Iceland will meet Kosovo in a football game on Iceland's home turf, at Laugardalsvöllur. The game starts at 18:45 local time, and if Iceland wins, the Icelandic national team will go through to the World Cup - for the first time in history! Anyone that follows football - and even those who don't follow football - will remember the 'fairytale' story of how Iceland made it to the quarter finals in UEFA EURO in 2016, the first major tournament Iceland's national football team ever participated in. Iceland tied with Portugal (that ended up being the champions), beat England's team 2-1

Fireball Meteor and Northern Lights Over Iceland!

Did you see the fireball meteor that shot across the sky last night in Iceland? Right at the same time as the Northern Lights were dancing across the sky? I didn't. I was relaxing at home last night in the centre of Reykjavík and at around 23:30 I glanced at my phone and saw that a friend had posted some images of gorgeous Northern Lights in the sky, and comments of various people saying they spotted a meteor in the sky. Now, I love the sky and stars and space and anything to do with nature, I once even entered a competition to be sent to space (I didn't win), so of course I was bummed to

Matwerk: New gastropub in Reykjavík!

Are you a foodie and coming to Reykjavík? Do you want to know about the latest, newest and trendiest things that are happening in the Icelandic restaurant scene? Then check out Matwerk. I remember growing up in Reykjavík when there was only about a handful of restaurants in the city. One Italian, another Mexican, one Asian (so generic Asian that it was actually called Asia), one traditional Icelandic and a good steak place. Plus some pizza, fried chicken and hamburger joints. This is no longer the case. Nowadays there's a handful of exciting culinary treats on every street corner. It feel

Beware of polar bears in Iceland - it is now puffin hunting season!

UPDATE: This blog is an April's Fool joke. There is no 'season' for polar bears, although the occasional polar bear does arrive in Iceland - and some parts of this blog has correct information. Polar bears are great swimmers, and when they do arrive in Iceland it's because they've been able to travel some of the way on ice. And 10 million puffins do arrive in Iceland each summer. In total around 500 polar bears have arrived in Iceland, since the year 890. In 1880-1881 there was an exceptionally cold winter, when parts of the sea froze - and then 63 polar bears came to Iceland. The winter of

Fun and tasty tapas at Tapasbarinn in central Reykjavík

Where to go for a fun dinner out with friends in Reykjavík? I can't think of a better place than Tapasbarinn. Tapasbarinn has been running since the year 2000 and is always as popular. The food is obviously Spanish and the décor is matching: Spanish cellar, whitewashed walls, dark wood, colourful tiles on floor, stained glass lanterns, large chunks of hanging meats and Latin music. The perfect place to go with a group of friends for some kind of a celebration and have some cocktails or sangria with your meal. I consider this one of Reykjavík's best restaurants, and have been here a number

Go to Sjávargrillið for divine seafood lunch!

Wondering what is a tasty but affordable lunch in Reykjavík? The answer is always fish of the day - it's just a question of which restaurant to go to. I have a few selected restaurants that are my stables to go to for a fishy lunch. Sjávargrillið, or the Seafood Grill, is one of them. The fish of the day during lunch time is always exceptional, and reasonably priced too, especially considering the quality of the fish you're getting. Being inside Sjávargrillið feels like you’re inside a homely alpine cabin with a fine dining luxury twist. The restaurant has an Icelandic design with its thic

The popular Snaps bistro in Reykjavík

Do you know the most happening restaurant in Reykjavík? Do you want to dine where the locals go? Then don't miss out on Snaps, that's where anyone who's anyone will go for post-work drinks or take their dates. Snaps is a bistro and a bar and became the ‘it’ place in Reykjavík from the moment it opened.  The menu is a mix of French, Danish and Icelandic cuisine and is rather small. The ingredients are Icelandic but the dishes are French (such as bouillabaisse) and you also have the option of ordering Danish smörrebröd. The service is efficient, friendly and informal and it’s the perfect pl
