The Laugavegur hiking trail, which lies between the geological paradise of Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk nature reserve, has been hailed as one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the world. It is in total about 54 km long, very well marked, and traditionally takes 3 or 4 days to finish. The trail takes you through an exceptionally varied landscape, starting with the multicolored rhyolite mountains, hot springs and expansive lava fields of Landmannalaugar, and then ending in Þórsmörk – an oasis of natural green birch woods in midst of three glaciers, Tindfjallajökull, Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull. On the way are black sandy deserts, white snowy areas, multiple hot springs, lakes as smooth as mirror glass, mountains in all shapes and different colours, and several unbridged rivers which the hikers need to wade by foot.
As the roads to both Landmannalaugar and Þórsmörk are F-marked, meaning they are quite difficult mountain roads only for well equipped 4x4 cars, they are not open all year round. The Icelandic Road Authority decides when they can be opened, which they usually both are between mid-June and mid-September. Traditionally the Laugavegur trail is only used during this short period of each year, since at other times the trail is both inaccessible and very challenging.
Those hikers who are on their own can either stay in mountain huts, which tend to get fully booked very quickly, or on camping grounds. And they usually need to carry on their backs all of the equipment they will need for the whole 3 or 4 days. However, what we offer is an all inclusive guided tour – with experienced Icelandic trekking guides. On day 1 we will pick you up to your accommodation in Reykjavík, and get you on one of our daily highland buses to Landmannalaugar where you will meet your group. Included is full board, starting with lunch on day 1 - ending with lunch on day 5, along with accommodation in the mountain huts. And possibly the best part - we offer transportation of your luggage between the huts, which means you only have to carry what you are going to need for each day‘s hike. When the tour is finished, the group takes one of our daily highland buses back from Þórsmörk to Reykjavík. Our tours have guides speaking English, German and Italian.

We provide pick-up by taxi to accommodation in Reykjavík between 07:15 and 07:45. You meet your group and guide at one of our daily highland buses to Landmannalaugar - departure from Reykjavík at 08:00. Estimated arrival in Landmannalaugar is 11:45. On this first day of the tour the groups gets to know each other by taking a relaxing walk together through the beautiful and colorful rhyolite area, and afterwards those who want can take a dip in the local natural geothermal pool. Participants enjoy dinner together, and stay for the night at the hut in Landmannalaugar.
The first day on hiking the Laugavegur trail starts early, as there is a long day ahead. The luggage that participants won't be needing for today's hike will be picked up and driven to the next hut. The path is slowly ascending until we reach the colorful hot spring area of Stórihver. We walk over white snowy areas until reaching the black obsidian lava fields of Hrafntinnusker. The hike continues, and once we get close to our next hut at lake Álftavatn, we experience a breathtaking view from the plateau before descending. We cross one rather cold unbridged river before finally reaching the hut in Álftavatn, where participants enjoy dinner together and stay for the night.
With the longest day of hiking behind us, we face two shorter and easier days - hiking about 15 km in each of them. Today's landscape consists of wide and expanse areas of gravel and black sand. We cross couple of unbridged rivers, but after that we can experience the solitude and vastness of the rather flat area, which offers wonderful view of surrounding mountains and glaciers. Our next hut is at Emstrur, where participants enjoy dinner together and stay for the night.
The final day of hiking the Laugavegur trail starts east from the hut, as the trail runs through a colorful canyon - from where there is a great view to the grand Mýrdalsjökull glacier, under which the extremely powerful volcano Katla rests. After crossing a bridge over the river Syðri-Emstruá - the rest of the trail is rather flat and easy. It runs along the river Markarfljót, and once we get closer to our final destination at Þórsmörk, where natural green birch woods cover valley after valley - it starts getting obvious why Iceland is called the land of contrasts. Just before finishing this long trail, we need to wade couple of more streams once reaching Þröngá river. Our final hut is located in one of the valleys of Þórsmörk, called Langidalur (e. Long Valley), where participants enjoy grilled meal together and stay for the night.
Even though the Laugavegur trail is behind us, we are not quite finished with the hiking, since before leaving Þórsmörk we will of course need to climb the hill Valahnjúkur. From the top - the view over the valleys, glaciers and rivers is like nothing else. This is a very popular place to take photographs of Þórsmörk. Once having climbed down from there participants have lunch together, and then board the bus back to Reykjavík from Langidalur - departure at 14:30. Estimated arrival time is 18:00.
