Icelandic horseback riding: Tölt

Icelandic horseback riding: Tölt

The Icelandic horse is pretty unique. It's the only horse in the world that has an extra gait called 'tölt', the 'Rolls Royce of horseback riding' as I heard on this great horseback riding trip through lava fields just outside of Reykjavík last week. I'm a pretty experienced horseback rider. When I was a kid I went on a few horse-riding workshops and my late grandpa used to own a few horses. Some of my best memories from childhood was when I would stay over at grandpa's, get up early and go to the horse farm where he kept his horses, go for a short ride and then to a swimming pool afterward

Helicopter flight to Mt Esjan

Saturday last week was a stunning day. There was not a single cloud in the sky and not even the slightest breeze. Iceland is generally a pretty windy country, so it's great when you get those fresh and clear autumn days. I was at the office, working, when I got a phone call asking if I could join a last minute helicopter tour to Mt Esjan. I didn't hesitate and said that of course I would come - and got told I had 2 minutes to get down to the domestic airport in Reykjavík. That's the beauty about the helicopter tours, even if you book them for a certain day, if the weather isn't co-operat

Iceland's Emergency Call!

You may start seeing this hunky guy above, the one in the middle that knows a thing or two about car repair, around the streets of Reykjavík and in places all over Iceland in the next few days and weeks. Today, (Thursday the 5th of November) until Saturday (the 7th) volunteers from the Icelandic rescue teams will be selling this guy on a keychain for a mere 2000 ISK. I urge you to buy him, it's the best souvenir you can get from Iceland. But who is this guy? This guy is the Neyðarkall - the Emergency Guy, sold by rescue squads all over Iceland once a year. Each year they release a new guy

The Future is Now!

The Future is Now!

The 21st of October 2015, is when Marty McFly and the Doc come to the future. That's TODAY. Sure, they come to the future in Hill Valley somewhere in America and not in Iceland, although Iceland has a lot of hills and a lot of valleys... but this doesn't mean that we can't still keep up with the times and dress like people there! It's not like it's far from the truth anyway, we may not have flying cars - but we've got Google Glass and Oculus Rift, and 3D printers and gadgets we can talk to... And some people dress in a futuristic 80's version on a daily basis, as you can see here: I'm

Reykjavík Bacon Festival

OHHHH BACON! Who doesn't like bacon? Glorious, glorious bacon?! And/or all other foods there are? This is a shout out to all the food lovers out there :)  Reykjavík Bacon Festival is held Saturday 15th of August 2015. The festival has been running since 2011, so this will be the 5th time the festival takes place. OHHHH BACON is the slogan of the festival. Which makes sense, right? To enjoy the festivities, simply head to Skólavörðustígur, the road in front of the big church (Hallgrímskirkja), you know, the one that's painted like a rainbow now, and eat some bacon! :) If you feel like

Reykjavík Gay Pride

The Icelandic Gay Pride Weekend is the second weekend of August every year. In fact, Reykjavík Pride started yesterday (Tuesday the 4th of August) and ends this Sunday - so the weekend has been extended! It's running from the 4th of August until the 9th of August 2015. You can find the schedule for Reykjavík Pride here. Perhaps the most noticeable thing that happened on the first day of Reykjavík Pride was that the citizens of Reykjavík painted one of the main streets downtown, Skólavörðustígur, in the colours of the rainbow. It even made the BBC news! This is the street that's right in fr

Slut walk in Reykjavík

Reykjavík's Slut Walk is happening for the fifth time in 2015. It's taking place on the 25th of July and starts at 2pm in front of Hallgrímskirkja church. The goal of the Slut Walk is to stop slut-shaming victims of sexual abuse and putting the shame onto the violators instead of the victims. Asking a victim of sexual abuse 'what they were wearing' has nothing to do with the crime - the action was taken by the violator and a person's outfit has nothing to do with them being raped. People should have the freedom to wear what they want - without fear of being sexually molested. The Slut Walk

Food and music in Reykjavík

Do you like food? Do you like music? In July, an acapella band is combining these two wonderful things in a night of delicious culinary treat along with a musical treat! Two beautiful men that I know are also beautiful singers. These incredibly sweet, funny and talented guys, Pétur and Bjarni, are a part of a vocal ensemble called Olga. They have a couple of concerts coming up, where they also serve people their food! I wanted to help them out by advertising for them - and help our Guide to Iceland readers out by pointing out these incredibly fun nights! Believe me, you don't want to m

Half day tour horseback riding in Reykjavík

Have you checked out the Icelandic horses? If you've never been horseback riding before, the Icelandic horses are a good starting point since they are smaller than other horses. I went on a half day tour with Reykjavík Riding Center last week. It was really sunny and warm and this was a really fun tour. The guy that runs the place was super friendly and chatty and always making jokes. After a bit of coffee we headed out for a short ride, only 1,5 hours on the horse. If it would've been much longer then I would probably have gotten quite stiff muscles the following day since it's been so lon
