The village is known for its breathtaking natural scenery, with rugged coastlines, open spaces, and mountains surrounding it.
Due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Raufarhofn is often referred to as the Arctic Circle Village. Since it's the northernmost village in Iceland, it's an ideal location to witness the northern lights during winter and the midnight sun during summer.
History of Raufarhofn
Beginning in the early 19th century, Raufarhofn was a well-known trading post and an excellent location to import and export goods. During the 1830s, Denmark authorized Raufarhofn to operate as a trading post, and the village began taking shape after 1875.
Like many coastal villages in Iceland, Raufarhofn's economy heavily depended on fishing. During the Icelandic herring frenzy, Raufarhofn became a key hub for salting and processing herring, becoming the second-largest station by 1944. However, in the late 1970s, the herring stock declined due to overfishing, resulting in the collapse of the village's economic base.
