Sönghellir, or 'Song Cave', is a cave on the Snæfellsnes peninsula famed for its echoing quality. The acoustics inside have a magical quality, so visitors should be sure to test how their voices sound.

Explore the depths of Iceland on a lava cave tour.

The location has been popular for centuries; within it, the names of two 18th Century travellers, Eggert Ólafsson and Bjarni Pálsson, can still be read amongst the names etched in the rock, although guests are requested not to copy and scratch their own. It is situated right by Snæfellsjökull, on the mountain pass that goes up to the glacier. Many smaller caves are in the area, and getting there is an exhilarating drive.

According to legend, Sönghellir sheltered the family of legendary 9th Century settler Bárður Snæfellsás. Half man, half-giant, and a wielder of magic, Snæfellsás is now considered the area's guardian spirit.
