We had a really positive experience renting our car through Guide to Iceland. The whole process was quick and easy, both online and at the airport desk. Their customer support was excellent. They reply very quickly via chat and can assist you in your own language as well as in English. I initially made a mistake and booked the car starting from the wrong date, but they immediately helped me cancel the booking and issued a full refund straight away (thank you again for your help!! ♡). They were also extremely helpful whenever something on the voucher wasn't completely clear. They took the time to look into it and explain everything properly, and all the information they gave us matched exactly what we were later told at the airport rental desk. We rented a Dacia Duster and found it very comfortable and a great 4x4 for travelling around Iceland. We also purchased all the available coverage, which gave us extra peace of mind and allowed us to enjoy the trip without worrying about the car. Our rental company was Geysir/Avis, and another thing we really appreciated was being able to submit our own photos of any existing damage when picking up the car. It's a simple but very useful way to document the condition of the vehicle and avoid any misunderstandings when returning it. The only thing that wasn't completely clear beforehand was the additional mileage charge introduced under Icelandic regulations in January 2025. On top of the rental price, there is a charge of approximately €0.07 per kilometre driven, which is calculated when you return the vehicle. However, this was clearly explained to us at the desk and was also stated in the rental agreement. Overall, we had a great experience and would happily use the service again!

If I could drive one of these cars in the US I would recommend owning one (Dacia Duster by Renault) It was roomy, nice driving and got good fuel mileage. The rental company I contracted through was very cooperative when I HAD ISSUES with the car that I first received from them. They replaced it with the same but different optioned model at some distance from them. I had a tire failure and they pointed me to a repair shop to get it replaced close to my location.. The car I rented had high mileage so some of the risk was on me to agree driving a high mileage car and I excepted that risk. All in all I had some misfortune with my rental but prefer to have the freedom to go where I want when I want. Loved seeing Iceland up close and personal. Regards SG

A 4x4 or SUV is Iceland's most popular rental category. These cars offer extra safety on gravel, stability in Iceland's strong winds, room for luggage and gear, and the only legal access to Highland F-roads in summer.
Choose this category for the safety and stability most Iceland travelers want, for driving the full Ring Road, for a Highland trip, or for renting a car in the winter season between October and March.
That stability matters most in winter. Icelandic authorities warn that gusts of 45 to 56 mph (72 to 90 km/h) can move any car on the road, and our study of the windiest and least windy months in Iceland found that days like that cluster from November to March. In those months, a 4x4 or SUV is the recommended choice.
A 4x4 is the only legal way to reach Iceland's F-roads, the mountain roads that open from late June to early September and lead into the Highlands. They take you to remote areas like Landmannalaugar Nature Reserve, Thorsmork Valley, and Askja Caldera.
On regular roads, four-wheel drive gives you better traction in winter, more stability against Iceland's crosswinds, and the cargo space for a long Ring Road trip.
