Information about Rauðisandur Beach

Rauðisandur (Red Sands) is a 10-kilometre red sand beach found in the south of Iceland’s Westfjords.

Rauðisandur stretches from the famed Látrabjarg bird-cliffs, in the west, all the way to Skorarhlíðar mountainside, in the east.

In a country famed for its jet-black, volcanic beaches, Rauðisandur is something of a rare example of Icelandic shoreline, offering guests a touch of Mediterranean ambience during your holiday here.

Many people believe that the shoreline’s name derives from the beach’s colour, whilst some claim it is derived from the area’s first ever settler, Ármóður rauði Þorbjarnarson or ‘Ármóður the Red’.

Guests to Rauðisandur will be in awe of the dazzling shades of yellow, orange and red found along the shoreline, providing a striking contrast to the deep blue waves of the Atlantic. As you walk along the shoreline, you will notice how the sand changes shade from yellow, to red, and eventually, the usual black so commonly seen in Iceland.
