Where to Stay in Heimaey
Heimaey is the only inhabited island in the Westman Islands archipelago, off the south coast of Iceland. It is a compact, dramatic place: a working harbor town hemmed in by steep volcanic peaks, ringed by seabird cliffs, and still marked by the 1973 Eldfell eruption that buried part of the town in lava and ash. For travelers, it is one of Iceland's most memorable places to spend a night or two.
Why stay in Heimaey
Most visitors day-trip from the mainland, but staying overnight gives you the island after the ferry crowd has gone. You can climb Eldfell or Helgafell at dawn, watch puffins return to the cliffs at Storhofdi in the evening, and linger at the harbor restaurants. The town is small and everything is walkable.
Types of accommodation
Accommodation is clustered in the town and includes a handful of hotels, guesthouses, self-catering apartments, cottages, and a seasonal campsite. Supply is limited, and the annual Thjodhatid festival on the first weekend of August fills everything months in advance.
Things to do on Heimaey
Puffins nest on the cliffs at Storhofdi between May and August in one of the world's largest Atlantic puffin colonies. The Eldheimar museum is built around a house dug out of the 1973 eruption deposits and is an excellent primer on the event. Boat tours from the harbor circle the archipelago, sometimes entering sea caves. Hikes up Eldfell, Helgafell, and along the coast offer panoramic views. The local aquarium and beluga sanctuary cap a full day. Golf enthusiasts often rate the oceanside course as one of the most scenic in Europe.
Getting there
The Herjolfur ferry runs between Landeyjahofn on the south coast and Heimaey harbor several times a day in summer, with the crossing taking about 40 minutes. When weather closes Landeyjahofn, sailings shift to Thorlakshofn. Domestic flights also operate between Reykjavik and Heimaey Airport. Bikes and rental cars are useful, but much of the town is walkable.
Booking tips
Book well ahead for summer and for Thjodhatid weekend in particular. Confirm ferry reservations at the same time, since vehicle spots sell out before passenger tickets. In unsettled weather, build in flexibility on either side of the trip, as ferry sailings and flights can be cancelled on short notice.
