Description

Spend a full day marveling over Iceland’s most incredible natural sights with this combination of South Coast sightseeing, glacier hiking, and northern lights hunting. Travelers eager to explore Iceland's breathtaking natural beauty shouldn't hesitate to book this tour.

To start your unforgettable journey, a friendly, expert guide will pick you up in a minibus from a meeting point in Reykjavik. You’ll then set out on a journey through beautiful landscapes towards one of the country’s most enchanting sightseeing routes, the South Coast.

The first stop on this trail is the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, an impressive feature standing at 197 feet (60 meters). A massive cavern opened behind the waterfall centuries ago when part of the cliff was eroded by waves. When conditions allow, you can walk behind the waterfall to take stunning photographs.

Next, you'll head to the glacier tongue of Solheimajokull, an outlet of the country’s fourth-largest ice cap, Myrdalsjokull. Your glacier hiking adventure will begin here. Your guide will provide you with the necessary equipment before taking you on a journey up the snowy slopes. This activity is very safe for those with a reasonable level of mobility.

Glacier hiking allows you to marvel over the unique features of these rare natural formations. You’ll see crevasses, listen to the underground rivers churning below them, and explore strange snowy landscapes. Many people expect the ice caps to be a vivid white, but you’ll also see shades of electric blue and black veins created by ash from past eruptions.

If that isn't enough, the views from the top are some of the country’s best.

After your descent, you’ll continue your sightseeing adventure by heading to one of the world’s most stunning and unusual beaches, Reynisfjara. The sands here are black due to the volcanism in the area, and they stretch as far as the eye can see. Offshore, basalt towers stand tall above the surface, and in the surrounding cliffs, you will see rare hexagonal columns.

Later, you’ll stop at the village of Vik for refreshments before turning back to Reykjavik. En route, you will stop at your final major destination, Skogafoss. This waterfall is just a few feet taller than Seljalandsfoss but seems much larger due to the power of its cascade. After a heavy rain or glacial melt, it can be up to 82 feet (25 meters) wide.

At this point of your adventure, the sky will be growing dark, creating the perfect conditions to hunt for the northern lights! As you return to the capital, your guide will seek out cloudless spots away from the tourist crowds in the hope of seeing the aurora borealis. There is no better way to finish a day in Iceland than with this once-in-a-lifetime light display.

Tick sightseeing, glacier hiking, and northern lights hunting off your bucket list with this South Coast tour from Reykjavik! Check tour availability by choosing a date.
