We built this study to settle which month is actually safest for an ice cave in Iceland, using 31 years of daily weather, the discharge of three glacial rivers, and 17,779 real ice cave bookings rather than guesswork. It covers what makes a cave roof fail, why February wins, why the busiest month is not the riskiest one, and how to read a cancellation rate without fooling yourself.
Ask a guide in Höfn when they'd take their own family into a glacier, and you won't hear "whenever the tour is running." You'll hear a month. Usually it's February.

That's not a hunch. Guide to Iceland analysed 31 years of daily weather for the ice cave country of the southeast, the discharge of three glacial rivers draining Vatnajökull, and 17,779 real ice cave bookings covering 46,684 travellers on two different glaciers.
The months don't come out equal, and the gap between the best and the worst is much wider than the tour calendar suggests.
What actually makes an ice cave dangerous
An ice cave isn't built. It's dissolved. Meltwater cuts a channel through the glacier in summer, the water drains away in autumn, and what's left is a hollow you can walk into. The same water that makes the cave is the thing that brings its roof down.
Vatnajökull National Park's 2017 risk assessment, written for the park by the University of Iceland glaciologists Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson and Finnur Pálsson with the mountain guide Jón Gauti Jónsson, grades conditions on exactly this. Green means snow on the ground or temperatures near freezing, with no visible melting or running water. Red means water, loose material, broken ice or cracks in the ceiling. Magnús Tumi has put a number on the summer version: the walls and roof of an ice cave can thin by 10 centimetres in a single day.
So "which month is safest" comes down to three measurable things. How much of the month does the ice stay frozen solid? How often does it cycle back and forth across freezing, which is what opens cracks? And how much water is moving through the glacier?
We built an index from those three, weighted 40% cold, 30% meltwater, 30% rain, using daily records from 1995 to 2025 for the Icelandic Met Office sites at Skaftafell (station 6499) and Kvísker (5316) plus the long station record for Höfn í Hornafirði, and discharge from the gauges on Skaftá, Hverfisfljót and Djúpá.
February comes out on top at +0.67, March runs it close at +0.64, and January follows at +0.61. December sits at +0.53. Then the season falls off a cliff. April scores -0.16, November -0.37, and October, the month the park reopens, scores -1.92.
Why February beats March, and why it beats December
The top four are close enough that the ranking alone doesn't settle it. What settles it is which measure you trust, and the park's own risk assessment is clear that the thing to watch is cold ice with no water in it.
On that measure February leads. Across the three sites, 18.9% of February days never rise above freezing, the highest share of any month, and February crosses the freezing point 5.7 times in an average month against 6.7 in January and 6.5 in December. Every one of those crossings expands and contracts the ice, so fewer of them means a more rigid roof.
March scores well because it's the driest month of the season and its glacial rivers are at their annual low. It's also much warmer. March holds the ice below freezing on only 10.7% of days, barely half of February's share, and it cycles across freezing on more days than any other month in the year. It's a good month with a real weakness. February doesn't have one.
Rain fits the same pattern. February takes 25% of its days as warm rain, meaning 5mm or more falling at above 2°C, against 33% in October and 28% in November. Only March, April and December take less, and April is far too mild to keep a cave rigid: it holds the ice below freezing on 1.9% of days. The meltwater tells the clearest story
If you only look at one chart, look at this one. Glacial river discharge is a direct readout of how much water is running through the ice, and it collapses in late winter.
In the glacial rivers draining Vatnajökull, February discharge falls to 36% of the annual average and March to 32%. By August it's at 264%, more than seven times the February figure. October, the month the park permits tours to resume, is still running at 101% of the annual average, which is to say the glacier is still actively draining when the first tours of the season go in.
This is the physical reason the trade settled on a November to March season in the first place, a conservative four to five months. Einar R. Sigurðsson, who between 1994 and 2012 was the only guide consistently running winter tours on Vatnajökull, stopped around 20 March each year because the sun was getting higher and warmer. The season stretched later, and in places into summer, well before the science changed.
What our own booking data says, and what it doesn't
Here's where you have to be careful with numbers, and it's the mistake most "safest month" articles make.
We looked at bookings on a Katla ice cave tour at Mýrdalsjökull that runs all year, which makes it the cleanest test we have: 7,528 departures once the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years are set aside. September produces more cancellations than any other month. September also sells more tours than any other month. Rank the months by how many cancellations they generate and you've simply ranked them by popularity: the rank correlation between bookings and cancellation counts is 0.84.
Switch to the cancellation rate, the share of bookings that actually got cancelled, and that relationship vanishes. The correlation drops to -0.08.
Once you're looking at rates rather than counts, month-to-month differences turn out to be a weak safety signal too. February 2026 was the fifth-coldest February on daytime highs in a 32-year record at Kvísker, with 8 days that never rose above freezing against an average of 4.4, and drier than a typical February. It still produced the second-highest cancellation rate of that winter. Cancellations answer to staffing, road access, group minimums and travellers changing their plans, not just to ice.
Day-level weather is a different matter, and there the signal is unmistakable.
On departure days with 20mm of rain or more, cancellations on the Breiðamerkurjökull crystal cave tours run at 20.4% against 13.2% on dry days. On the Katla tour it's 14.0% against 9.0%. Two separate operations on two separate glaciers, both roughly half again as likely to cancel in heavy rain, both statistically significant at p < 0.001. October has the most heavy-rain days of any month in the season, 12.1% of them, which is one more reason the start of the season behaves the way it does.
The season is now set by rule, not by judgement
Nobody runs a Breiðamerkurjökull ice cave tour in September any more, and that isn't an operator preference. On 25 August 2024, an ice wall collapsed on the glacier, killing an American visitor and seriously injuring another. Vatnajökull National Park suspended ice cave tours inside the park, and the rules that came out of it are the strictest in the country.
Ice cave tours inside the park run October to April and are closed May through September. Operators appoint experienced lead guides who assess every cave and every overhanging feature daily, and if a site is judged unsafe, nobody goes there that day. An expert council drawn from the operators themselves, the park, the Icelandic Travel Industry Association, the East-Skaftafell Tourism Association and the Association of Mountain Guides in Iceland oversees those assessments, funded by a fee the companies pay per customer. Thirty-four companies applied for the 30 contracts available in the current two-year round, which started in November 2024.
Worth knowing: those rules stop at the park boundary. Kötlujökull, where the Katla ice cave sits above Vík í Mýrdal, is outside it, and ice cave tours there aren't governed by the same framework. Dagbjartur Brynjarsson, safety specialist at the Icelandic Tourist Board and chair of the government's working group on tourist safety, put it plainly in April 2025: "In reality, there are no established rules on how ice cave tours should be conducted in Iceland."
If you want the cave to yourself
February is the answer on conditions. January is the answer if you also care about crowds. Of the in-season bookings we analysed on the Breiðamerkurjökull tours, January is the quietest month by some distance at 935, against 1,309 in February and 2,374 in October.
January scores +0.61 on our index against February's +0.67. To put that gap in context, the share of cold, dry days in February has run anywhere from 0% to 64% across the 31 winters we looked at. A difference that small between two months disappears inside that. You'd give up almost nothing on conditions and share the cave with a fraction of the people.
October is the opposite trade. It's the busiest month in our data and the weakest month of the season on cold, rain and meltwater alike.

How we did this study
Weather
Daily maximum and minimum temperature and rainfall, 1995 to 2025, for three sites in the southeast: the Icelandic Met Office stations Skaftafell (6499, 86m) and Kvísker (5316, 30m), and Höfn í Hornafirði, taken from the Global Historical Climatology Network daily archive as WMO 04082 (1973-2025, 7m). Only Höfn is an observed station series here. The Met Office does not publish downloadable daily series for Skaftafell or Kvísker, so for those two we used ERA5 reanalysis at each station's exact coordinates, corrected month by month against the Höfn station record. That correction removes an average 1.9°C cold bias in daily maxima and cuts the root mean square error from 2.4°C to 1.5°C over 6,409 days of overlap at Höfn. It is fitted at Höfn and applied at all three sites, so treat the Skaftafell and Kvísker figures as good estimates rather than observations. Both reanalysis grid elevations sit within 6m of the real station.
Definitions
Freezing days are days whose maximum stays below 0°C. Freeze-thaw cycles count how many times the daily mean temperature crosses 0°C in a month. Warm rain is 5mm or more falling on a day whose maximum exceeds 2°C. Heavy rain is 20mm or more in a day. A dry day is under 1mm.
Glacial river discharge
Mean daily discharge by month at the Icelandic Met Office and Landsvirkjun gauges on Skaftá at Sveinstindur (1986-2020, catchment 66% glaciated), Hverfisfljót (1981-2005, 69%) and Djúpá (1968-2021, 33%), which drain the southern and southwestern flank of Vatnajökull. Each river is indexed to its own annual mean before averaging. Source: LamaH-Ice (Helgason and Nijssen, Earth System Science Data, 2024). No long-record gauge exists on the southeastern outlets where the ice caves actually are: Jökulsá á Breiðamerkursandi is now roughly 500m long, too short to gauge, and the nearest long-record catchment, Smyrlabjargaá in Suðursveit, is only 4% glaciated. So this is a Vatnajökull-wide melt-season signal rather than a Breiðamerkurjökull one.
Bookings & cancellations
17,779 ice cave bookings covering 46,684 travellers: 9,725 on Breiðamerkurjökull crystal cave tours from Jökulsárlón (October to April departures, April 2024 to April 2026) and 8,054 on the year-round Katla ice cave tour from Vík (March 2017 to July 2026). Breiðamerkurjökull departures outside the October to April window are excluded entirely, because operators no longer run that glacier out of season. Only departures whose outcome is settled are counted. Pandemic years 2020 and 2021 are excluded from the Katla monthly figures, which leaves 7,528. Cancellation rates are always expressed as a share of bookings for that month, never as a count, because counts follow booking volume.

Summary
If you only get one shot at a natural ice cave, take February. The ice has had a full winter to set, meltwater channels are at their quietest, and guides have spent three months watching which caves are holding and which have already collapsed. January runs it close. March gives up ground week by week, and by April the natural caves under Vatnajökull close for good reason.
The month matters less than the guide, though. Ice caves shift constantly, and a chamber that was solid last Tuesday can be off-limits today. The only real safety check is a certified guide who walked it that morning, which is why every ice cave tour in Iceland is guided.
