Description

Guesthouse Hamar is a family-owned and operated 3-star hotel located steps from the ferry landing on Heimaey, the largest island in the South Iceland archipelago known as the Westman Islands. In the heart of Vestmannaeyjar, it offers all the conveniences of a city hotel yet easy access to the numerous attractions throughout the island.

Location & Nearby

Guesthouse Hamar beckons weary travelers just 820 feet (250 meters) from the Herjolfur Ferry Terminal in Vestmannaeyjar, the largest settlement on Heimaey Island. The island is well-known in history books as the survivor of the famous Eldfell Volcano eruption, which wiped out one-fifth of the town in 1973. It is here that the ferry connects Heimay to the mainland at Landeyjahofn, a 35-minute sailing time. Within walking distance of the hotel, there is a Kronan discount supermarket, several restaurants and bars (including a brewery), the Sagnheimar Natural history museum, the Sea Life Trust Beluga Whale Sanctuary and Saeheimar Aquarium, and a public swimming pool. The Eldheimar Volcano Museum, which chronicles the aforementioned 1973 eruption of Eldfell, is a 0.9 mile (1.5 kilometer) walk. It's also possible to walk up to the Eldfell crater, where this catastrophic volcano erupted, a further 1.6 miles (2.7 kilometer) away. The Vestmannaeyja Golf Club, which is one mile (1.7 kilometers) southwest. Vikin Beach, at the bottom of the island, is an easy 2.8 mile (4.6 kilometer) drive.

Attractions further afield on Heimaey Island include numerous boat tours from May to September to view puffins (there are more puffins here and throughout the Westman Islands than anywhere else in the world). Orcas and Fin Whales make appearances, too! You can also see them from land at windswept Storhofdi, the 'Great Cape' on the southern side of Heimaey, located 3.6 miles (5.8 kilometers) south of Hamar. Several hiking paths are found on the five square mile (13 square kilometer) island as well.

The Vestmannaeyjar Airport is 1.8 miles (2.3 kilometers) south of the guesthouse.

Facilities & Amenities

Hamar offers economy twin, double/twin, triple, and family rooms ranging in size from 193 square feet (18 square meters) to 247 square feet (23 square meters). All rooms are equipped with a private bathroom, shower, hairdryer, tea/coffee facilities, and a TV. Classically decorated rooms are simple, with occasional antique flourishes. Breakfast is included from May 15 to September 15. Common areas/facilities offered include a shared lounge, a terrace, and a vending machine with soft drinks. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
