Hotels and Accommodation in Iceland by Season
Iceland is a year-round destination, but the seasons change dramatically and so do the best places to stay. Summer brings the midnight sun and open highland roads, while winter offers the northern lights and cosy hot-tub evenings. Choosing accommodation by season helps you make the most of the time of year you visit.
Summer
From June to August, long days and mild weather open up the whole island, including the highlands. Demand and prices peak, so book hotels, guesthouses and cottages well in advance.
Winter
From November to March, winter is the season for northern lights, ice caves and snowy landscapes. Rural hotels and cottages with hot tubs make magical bases, and prices are often lower outside the holidays.
Spring
April and May bring lengthening days, fewer crowds and good value, a great time for the South Coast, the Golden Circle and early-season road trips.
Autumn
September and October combine autumn colours with the return of the northern lights and quieter roads, making it a favourite shoulder season for many travellers.
Northern Lights Season
The aurora is visible roughly from late September to early April. Stay at rural properties with dark skies, ideally with a hot tub or large windows, for the best chance to see it.
Midnight Sun Stays
In June and July, the sun barely sets. Look for accommodation with blackout curtains, and enjoy late-night hikes, photography and sightseeing under the midnight sun.
Booking and Prices by Season
Summer is busiest and most expensive, while winter and the shoulder seasons offer better rates and availability. Booking early is essential in peak months and for popular rural areas.
How to Choose by Season
Match your stay to what you want to experience, whether that is the midnight sun, the northern lights or quieter shoulder-season travel. Browse the options below to find and compare places to stay by season.
