Description

Explore a completely different side to Iceland’s tourism by staying in a yurt on the deserted, spectacular island of Traustholtsholmi. Anyone seeking unconventional experiences, eco-friendly travel and a way to connect to Arctic nature will find a stay here unforgettable.

Location & Nearby

The Traustholtsholmi retreat is located on an island in the Thjorsa river on the southern shore of Iceland, just over an hour’s drive from Reykjavik. Though the point of escaping here is to get away from the manmade world and signs of infrastructure, you’ll be able to get gas and groceries at the nearest town, Selfoss, just 25 minutes away.

It is possible to spend a night or more immersing yourself in the Traustholtsholmi experience as part of a wider South Coast exploration or a Golden Circle . After all, it is only an hour from the nearest attractions of each, Seljalandsfoss waterfall and the Geysir Geothermal Area respectively.

Facilities & Amenities

Traustholtsholmi may only have one year-round resident, but it has everything that a traveller can need, particularly on a spiritual level. The beautifully woven Mongolian yurt you will be staying in is warmed by a hearth and insulated with woollen walls, making it a great place to retreat from the cool evenings. Each of these can fit two adults, with room for two more children if need be.

Food is sourced from the island itself, and enjoyed in a feast each evening. The salmon is caught from the river and vegetables grown in the garden, the harvesting of which you are welcome to join. Aside from fishing and gardening, you can spend your time on the island birdwatching, hiking around its circumference, or simply reconnecting with the beauty of untouched nature in the tall grass.

As Traustholtsholmi is only open in June and July, it provides an incredible opportunity to fully enjoy the majesty of Iceland’s midnight sun, which is at its brightest over these months.

There may be no televisions or other electronics on the island, but you’ll find that a blessing as soon as you are absorbed into the ambience of the scene. Don’t worry if you have concerns about a total natural immersion, however; Iceland has mobile coverage even in its remote landscapes.

Why Choose Traustholtsholmi?

Traustholtsholmi is an essential experience for those looking for an unforgettably unique, eco-friendly, spiritually uplifting place to stay in Iceland. Don’t delay; grab your place while availability lasts!
