The following pictures and information is about the volcanic eruption in Holuhraun in Bardarbunga that occurred between August 2014 and March 2015 in Iceland. The population was safe throughout the eruption and so were travelers. All airports, domestic and international, were open throughout the entire eruption.

Volcanic eruptions are very common in Iceland, with individual events occurring on average every 3 - 4 years. Iceland itself is a volcanic island that was formed in a volcanic eruption. It sits on the Mid-Atlantic ridge, and is split between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.
