Iceland sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and has more than 30 active volcanic systems. On a volcano tour you can go inside a dormant volcano, walk through lava tubes, hike across fresh lava fields or fly over the newest eruption sites.
Visitors could hike safely to the eruptions at Fagradalsfjall in 2021 and 2022 and at Litli-Hrutur in 2023, all on the Reykjanes Peninsula. Since December 2023, the Sundhnukagigar crater row has erupted nine times, most recently in 2025, and its newest lava fields are best seen on helicopter tours.
There is no eruption at Sundhnukagigar at the moment. The most recent one ended in 2025, but the Icelandic Meteorological Office reports that magma is still building up beneath the Svartsengi volcanic system, so another eruption is possible.
Our study of how often volcanoes erupt in Iceland puts the long-term average at one eruption every four to five years. Even if an eruption happens during your trip, there’s no guarantee you’ll be able to reach it, so most volcano tours visit cooled lava fields and older volcanic sites.
When to visit: guided highland tours and super jeep trips reach many of these sites, mostly in summer when the highland roads are open.
