This area is renowned for its dramatic lava landscapes, with conic volcanoes, fields of jagged basalt, geothermal areas, and geological marvels. As you travel, however, the feature that will no doubt keep your attention is the column of smoke rising from the site of Fagradalsfjall. On some days, you’ll even be able to see its flames reaching the sky.
As the anticipation for your volcano viewing builds, you’ll make three stops at the regions’ beautiful spots. Kleifarvatn is the largest lake in the area, with hot springs and fascinating history as the site of a dramatic earthquake. Krisuvikurleid, meanwhile, is a spectacular driving route, surrounded by jagged peaks and steeped in idyllic beauty.
You’ll next make a brief stop at the geothermal area of Seltún, where you can marvel over hissing vents, bubbling mud pits, and brightly colored water and earth.
Finally, you’ll get to the parking area for the hike to Fagradalsfjall volcano. Your guide will dress you in the necessary equipment before leading you into Geldingdadalur valley, where one of the world’s most breathtaking sites awaits.
Nothing compares to the majesty of an erupting volcano. Flaming craters and fissures, gleaming rivers of molten rock, and a glowing field of lava make the time you will spend here unforgettable. Be sure to bring a drone or camera to capture this phenomenal event!
