Come along on this fantastic mountain bike tour where you'll ride through the beautiful Icelandic scenery and get a unique view over Skjálfandi Bay and the stunning Kinnarfjöll Mountains. Discover the gems hidden outside of Húsavík town, such as Lake Botnsvatn, and ride on both gravel and dirt paths which were either made by man or by Icelandic free-roaming sheep.
This exciting mountain bike tour is the perfect opportunity for those travelling to North Iceland as you will start the trip in the town of Húsavík. You will meet your guides right above Húsavík harbour and receive your bike and your helmet.
After mounting your bike, you will ride through the town centre, towards the beautiful Skrúðgarður park. You will cycle through the park, along the river Búðará and up towards a small, green ravine where you will find a little pond frequently visited by ducks. From there, you will travel up the gully, along the river on a dirt trail, through heaths and low-grown scrub until you reach the stunning Botnsvatn lake.
Now it is time to start the trip around the lake. Low-grown heather and prominent blue lupine surround the lake, and you will make your way along an old forestry grove. In all kinds of weather and during every season the colourful scenery around lake Botnsvatn is fascinating. Here you will ride on old and narrow sheep paths which have, in the past years, been well adjusted to hiking and biking. The tracks can, at parts, be technical for mountain bike beginners but your guide will help you through it if you are a novice cyclist.
At the far end of the lake, you'll make a stop to rest and take a few photos before making your way back, this time you'll cycle along the north side of the lake where you will go over a landslide and a somewhat technical path. Just remember that it is always possible to step off the bike and push it if you are new to mountain biking or have little or no experience in riding over landslides.
This particular landslide is not long, however, and following is a rather easy track, which you will follow until you reach the path you rode on the way up to the lake. This time, you are making your way downhill and so the route will not only be easier but also more fun.
You will make a turn to the other side of Búðará river where you can follow a trail with lots of stair steps. From there, you will ride through the forest and skiing slopes above Húsavík where you can choose to head straight through the woods or go down some technical stair steps in the forest. Then you will make your way back on the streets of Húsavík town where you will bid farewell to your guides.
