Immerse yourself in the wonders of the Westman Islands with this excellent tour that combines sightseeing and puffin-watching. This excursion should not be missed by any who are passionate about wildlife and nature.

This tour begins when you are picked up in a minibus from Heimaey, the only inhabited landmass on the Westman Islands archipelago. The small size of your vehicle means that you can expect a personalised experience with your friendly guide.

The order in which you visit the sites will depend on the weather, but you have a fair few on your agenda, and will reach each as you travel around the island.

You will, for example, get to walk into the crater of the Eldfell volcano, which erupted in the middle of town without warning in 1973, threatening to engulf the whole island. You’ll also see

the famous ‘elephant rock’ formation, where the cliff face looks uncannily like its namesake, and the beautiful valley of Herjólfsdalur, where there are ruins from one of the island’s first settlers.

Of course, you will also reach the best puffin watching cliffs on the island to admire an array of seabirds that include puffins. Over 60% of the world’s North Atlantic puffins nest in Iceland, and more nest in the Westman Islands than any other part of the country, from May to September.

If conditions allow, you’ll also go to Sprangan, where your guide will show off their skills swinging and scaling up and down a cliff, as is tradition on the archipelago as a way of retrieving eggs and down.

Finally you will head to local aquarium, which will soon also include a beluga sanctuary. Here, you can learn about the fish and birds of Iceland, and meet a puffin up close; the famous Tóti has been delighting guests for years.
