Scuba Diving Adventure | Visit a Shipwreck in Faxafloi Bay

Your adventure begins as you meet up with your local guide in Reykjavík City. You will be fully equipped with an insulating diving suit and scuba diving gear, as well as being informed of all necessary safety regulations needed for the exploit ahead.

The vessel which you will be visiting sank in 1992, between two small islands just outside of Reykjavík. Since the depth of the ocean here is only 12-24 metres (40-80 feet), depending on the tide, an open water certificate suffices―as opposed to more advanced levels of diving certifications. 

You will begin by making the short and scenic RIB boat ride up to where the wreck is located, enjoying the views of the many islets of Faxaflói Bay, such as Lundey, Viðey, Engey and Þerney. During the summer season, puffins nest in many of these islands, meaning you might just get the additional pleasure of glimpsing these adorable creatures.

Once you have arrived at the location of the wreck, it’s time to descend underneath the surface of the ocean and explore the forgotten world below. The ship itself is in prime condition, except that the front of its bridge has collapsed, giving the whole scene a haunting and otherworldly allure.

Although the level of visibility can never be fully guaranteed, on most days it is excellent, providing a stunning underwater view as you swim past the fish circling the sunken historical monument, where colourful corals grow along the vessel's muddy deck.
