An excursion into Víðgelmir cave is exciting, interesting, and adventurous.
Your in-bus audio guide will inform you about the attractions you visit—and there are ten languages to choose from!
Víðgelmir is an immense lava tube situated in the Hallmundarhraun lava field.

Explore a fascinating lava tube, bask in natural hot springs, and see the spectacular sights of Borgarfjörður on this incredible day tour. Don’t miss your opportunity to marvel over these lesser-known but still spectacular places.

You will be picked up from your Reykjavík accommodation nice and early, in a modern, unique bus. You are provided with a tablet, there is free wifi, and you will also get an ‘in-Bus Audio Guide’, which allows you to hear a commentary of the tour in one of ten different languages. Of course, you will have an expert guide on board too, to answer any questions you have.

The first place you will head to is the lava tube cave Víðgelmir. Once you arrive, you’ll put your helmet on, take your torch in hand, and enter the cave down an all-new walkway.

Víðgelmir is a spectacular place; it is vast, the rocks are coloured vividly with the minerals of the earth, and the lava formations are bizarre and fascinating. The terrain is a little rugged, and it can be a little daunting to walk beneath the surface of the earth, but you are sure to find this part of the excursion exciting, interesting, and adventurous.

Once you have enjoyed Víðgelmir, you will take a scenic drive to Húsafell, where you will have lunch, and the opportunity to dip into the town’s thermal baths. There is nothing more relaxing or therapeutic than basking in Iceland’s geothermal waters; following the excitement and adventure of the cave, the pools promise to recharge you for the rest of the trip.

Following your swim, you will start the sightseeing component of this tour, travelling to the stunning Borgarfjörður region. The main stops here are two waterfalls. The first of these is Barnafoss. This remarkable feature is fed by the Hvíta river, originating in the nearby Eiríksjökull glacier, and runs by the edge of a strange yet beautiful plain of smooth lava. It is well known for good trout fishing.

By Barnafoss is another beautiful set of waterfalls, collectively called Hraunfossar. Despite their proximity, these two falls could not be more different; Barnafoss is powerful, tall and daunting, with a dark history of taking lives. Hraunfossar Falls, however, are gentle, serene, and trickle over a stretch of lava 900 metres wide. Both are beautiful in their own right.

Following this, you will take the scenic drive back to your accommodation in Reykjavík, while your guide tells you more about the surrounding scenery. When you return, it will be with a feeling of great satisfaction, having seen an enormous wealth of Iceland’s incredible beauty in just one day.

Jump aboard, to enjoy caving, a geothermal pool, and a great sightseeing adventure. Listen to everything you need to know about the region in the language most comfortable for you. Check availability by choosing a date.
