Join this easy but rewarding caving excursion from Reykjavík to Leiðarendi, the most famous lava tube in Iceland. This short but exciting tour is the ideal choice for any travellers looking for an authentic Icelandic adventure without having to travel far from the capital or commit an entire day to a single experience.

Your journey begins as you get picked up in the bustling city centre of Reykjavík and whisked away to the landscapes of the Reykjanes Peninsula, where vast lava fields stretch out in all directions, dotted with patches of moss and surrounded by majestic mountains, all of which characterises the island’s young and volcanic terrain.

Once you arrive at your destination, you will find yourself at the entrance of cave Leiðarendi, a circular lava tube with the impressive length of 900 metres (3,000 feet). The cave nests in the midst of the Tvíbollahraun lava field, last eruption dating back to around 950 AC.

In fact, several different streams of lava have flowed through this natural underground tunnel over the course of the centuries, visible on the inside of the cave due to lava flakes having fallen from its walls and roof due to years of frost and erosion.

Once your knowledgeable and friendly local guide has provided you with all the necessary caving equipment, including a helmet and head light, you will be ready to step inside the cave’s narrow opening to discover the stunningly colourful underworld within.

The distinctive features of the cave include glistening lava walls, stalagmites, stalactites, varied rock formations and, sometimes, natural ice sculptures. All the while, be prepared to learn firsthand the history of Iceland’s fascinating geology, which might not be any more visibly evident than in this fantastic location.

Don’t forget to bring your camera to take some of this otherworldly scenery home with you. Go ahead and book your lava tube adventure in South Iceland now. Check availability by choosing a date.

Reviews

This tour greatly exceeded our expectations. Our guide Micah was great and walked everyone through both the history of the cave and what we could expect throughout our adventure. In the cave, you have the option of taking more advanced routes as you go, making it as easy or as challenging as you want it to be. Great choice for both beginner and experienced cavers. If you're feeling adventurous and choose to take the side routes, I'd recommend a pair of knee pads (side routes require a lot of crawling) and to not wear bulky clothing as you will get warm and bulky clothing tears easily on the rocks... my girlfriend ruined her snowpants but still had the time of her life! No regrets. VERY glad we went on this tour and well worth the price!!

My most challenging & satisfying experience in Iceland! Guide Micah was outstanding as he described & narrated the lava landscape and led our small group through the cave including options to take side routes -if you wanted- or keep to the main path. We had a moment of complete “dark & stillness” by group consent (lights out) and it was magical. I’m looking forward to touring another lava cave.

Great experience in the lava tube with professional guide. The tour is short - only 3 hours, which was great for our plans on the last day in Iceland. Highly recommend. If you are claustrophobic, keep in mind that you will be in a dark and relatively closed space for one hour.

The caving trip was really great! I learnt a lot about how lava caves are created and how they change over time, and also that sometimes sheep go in them...but can't get out! It was a great to have our guide show us some extra cave areas as well, very fun, and informative as well. I absolutely recommend the tour!

exceeded my expectations, all went smooth and i enjoyed this adventure and a professional guide

Amazing!! Special shoutout to our tour guide, viktor!! He was so great, very knowledgeable and fun. Never made us feel like we were on a "tour". The caves are absolutely amazing, definitely a must see! When asked to keep going or go back the same way you came, keep going! That's where the real adventure is :)

Pálmi was hands down one of the most amazing tour guides! We were having trouble getting the parking meters to work in Reykjavik and Pálmi not only waited for us to figure it out, he helped us get it to work! As far as the tour goes, he was knowledgeable and entertaining and overall fun to talk to and learn from. The lava tube was amazing and although you did have to bend over to fit in some places, it was still a pretty easy tour. And I think that should mean a lot coming from me as I'm a 200 pound young woman. At the end of the cave, Pálmi gave everyone the option to head back to the car or to venture down the more difficult part of the cave so as to exit from the hole opposite where we entered. I was nervous about if I could make it through, but I was too excited not to try!! It was a little difficult and I definitely got a little winded, but it was absolutely worth every moment! This was an excellent tour, especially for the price, and Pálmi made it one hundred times better!! - Alexis & Kyle

it was a amazing trip. the tour is so cool, nice and knowledgable!!! I was very surprise that I could that much in this tour!! takk :))

I have very mixed feelings about the tour. Overall, we enjoyed ourselves. The lava tube experience was unique to us. It's unlike any cave we have visited beforehand. Things we liked: Lava tubes are very unique type cave structures. The tour ran very timely with pickup at the agreed upon time. Our guide was very friendly. Things we didn't like: Though our guide was very friendly, our guide never introduced himself. I still don't know his name. The guide was trying to be informative. However, for a cave guide not to know the difference between a stalactite and stalagmite seems very odd to me. I the tourist should not need to educate him. After telling him how I remember the difference between the two, he later explained to another person in our group that they are formed by lava dripping down. I just kind of stood there in disbelief that this was his explanation. I did not correct him. In fairness to the guide, he said it was only the second time he had been to the cave. I would suggest that the company leadership do more to orient their guides to the subject matter of this tour. I would still recommend the tour. It just could have been better for the above reasons.

Not worth it! 40 mins in a tiny cave shared with 30 others? Definitely not worth the price despite this the tour guides were nice and rented equipment was of good quality, felt rushed through the cave due to the number of other tourists so not much information about the cave and it's origins was provided
