Thrilling 2 Hour ATV Buggy Ride across a Black Sand Beach with Transfer from Hella

Join an adrenaline-pumping two-hour buggy ride across a black sand beach on Iceland’s South Coast. This tour should not be missed by thrill-seekers eager to witness some of this country’s most beautiful landscapes, in a group of no more than five guests.

This excursion begins at the buggy base camp near the village of Hella, which is easy to reach from Reykjavík by driving along Route 1 South. Here, you’ll meet your friendly guides and be introduced to your vehicle for the day; after getting dressed into the safety equipment provided, you’ll board and set out into some spectacular nature.

Please note that you need a driving license to operate a buggy, but non-drivers aged seven and up can be passengers.

To reach the black sand beach, you’ll travel along a winding gravel road that runs alongside a river. Not only will this give you a chance to get used to operating your buggy, but will introduce you to some wonderful sites such as the Djúpósarstífla damn. You’ll also have an excellent opportunity to admire the abundant birdlife that nests in the area.

Once you reach Þykkvabæjarfjara Beach, you’ll be mesmerised by its unique beauty; for fourteen kilometres, black sands stretch as far as the eye can see, providing a landscape that looks as if it belongs in another world. The abundant space makes this the perfect location for a thrilling, adrenaline-pumping exploration on your buggy.

As you ride, you’ll stop for occasional photo opportunities; most notably, there is a long-discarded shipwreck, images of which will help reflect the air of isolation and abandonment felt in Iceland’s nature. It is also very common to see a wealth of seabirds and seals on the beach.

After a two-hour adventure, you’ll head back to base camp and return your equipment, your heart no doubt still thundering in excitement. Due to the convenient and efficient nature of this tour, you’ll have the rest of the day to either relax or fill with other adventures.
