Mount up and ride the Icelandic horse along a soft black sand beach in South Iceland.
The adventure starts in the morning where you will be picked up in Reykjavík and driven to base camp in the municipality of Ölfus. Once there, you will be equipped with the necessary riding gear and matched with the right horse.
If you are travelling along the South Coast, you can meet your guides on location, just remember to show up approximately 20 minutes before.
The 25-kilometre long ride typically starts at the beach by the Þorlákshöfn village. After riding for about 3 kilometres along the coastline, you'll continue through the area of Hraun where a short break will take place so that you can feast on your complimentary lunch pack.
After strengthening up, the tour moves on and heads to Ölfusengjar pastures. Along the way, you'll cross a couple of wild rivers (Varmá and Gljúfurá) several times. You will also travel through meadows which are covered with blue lupine flowers and are the home of a variety of wild birds. This experience allows you to get in touch with Iceland's majestic and dramatic nature—both its flora and fauna.
The ride continues to Arnabæli farm where you have the opportunity to take pictures of the breathtaking scenery of central Ölfus: the beautiful grassy fields and mountain. After the short break, the ride continues until you reach base camp again.
The tour's long distance ensures that you will experience 4 out of the 5 gaits of the Icelandic horse: walk, trot, the famous tölt and gallop. Therefore, medium or expert levels of horse riding skills are required.
At the horse farm, after the tour, you can enjoy free coffee and snacks as well as warm traditional homemade soup.
Don't let this chance of befriending the Icelandic horse fly away. Check availability by choosing a date.
Please note that medium or expert level of horse riding skills is required.
