Description

Book your private tour around the volcanic wonderland of Reykjanes Peninsula in your private SUV 4x4 vehicle.

Your tour will begin with your driver-guide will pick you up at your accommodation and take you to one of two UNESCO recognized areas of geological significance in Iceland, Reykjanes Geopark, sitting on the doorstep of Reykjavík.

You will see this area is full of natural and geological wonders, rugged lava fields, geothermal areas and active volcanoes.

On your way, you will see Lake Kleifarvatn, and if you are lucky, you could see the mysterious beast in this lake, similar to Loch Ness in Scotland.

You will make a stop at Seltún in Krýsuvík, with hot steams and hot boiling mud pools and this pleasant smell.

Next, you will drive along the coast of the peninsula through the rugged lava fields of Reykjanes, which are covering much of this peninsula. When you approach the toe of the peninsula, you can see the Mid-Atlantic Ridge rise above sea level and stretch beneath the Atlantic Ocean from the Arctic to the Antarctic. This is formed because the tectonic plates are drifting apart 2-3 centimetres every year. In fact, here you can walk along the ridge and between the continents: North America and Europe.

On your way through this wonderland, you will visit Gunnuhver, one of the best-known hot springs on Reykjanes and named after a famous ghost lady Gunna, who met her final fate in this hot spring. Nearby you will see a 10 km long chain of craters and steam vents, which are still quite warm with hot steam coming out. In earlier times, women from Grindavík, a fishing village,  came here to bake bread in the steam vents by the craters.

Very close by, you can see the most popular tourist destination on the Reykjanes Peninsula, the famous Blue Lagoon, which shows that these two industries can find fascinating ways to work together. The mineral-rich water is heated up deep below the lava fields, and the discharge water which would be released into the nearby lava field is what forms the Blue Lagoon. As the tour comes to a close, you have the option to experience this unique bathing environment for yourself.
