Fully immerse yourself in Iceland’s most famous sightseeing route, by snorkelling through Silfra during your exploration of the Golden Circle. This tour should not be missed by those who want to enjoy the country’s most essential experience, without losing out on a moment of adventure.

The tour begins when you are picked up from your central Reykjavík pick up point, and driven to Þingvellir National Park, the first site of the Golden Circle. This is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Icelandic Mainland because it was the original site of the world’s longest-running parliament, formed in 930 AD.

Though the history is fascinating, it is the geology that is likely to impress you more. Þingvellir is located right between two tectonic plates, which are pulling apart. This tension causes many ravines to open across the lava fields, which fill up with springwater travelling underground from Langjökull glacier. Silfra is one of these ravines.

After exploring the park, therefore, you will head to the carpark here and have a briefing on the route you are about to take through the water. You will be helped into your snorkelling gear before your guides will take you to the entrance.

As soon as you put your face under, you will see why Silfra is considered to be one of the world’s greatest snorkelling and diving sites. Due to the long filtration process through the lava, Silfra's water emerges crystal clear and perfectly clean.

The visibility exceeds 120 metres, and you can drink the water as you swim. The colours and geology under the water’s surface are incredible, and the journey is made easy and relaxing by a current pushing you along.

After the tour, you will have hot chocolate and cookies to warm up, before heading off to the next site of the Golden Circle. This is the Geysir Geothermal Area in Haukadalur. Famed for its geysers and mud pots.

You will be able to see Strokkur erupt to heights of thirty metres or so every five to ten minutes. While you wait for it to go off, you can admire the many hot springs and steaming vents that dot the area.

The final destination on the famed Golden Circle route is Gullfoss Waterfall. This iconic landmark has come to be a symbol of Iceland, representing its beauty and raw power. It surges in two tiers into a valley, which carves dramatically through an otherwise hilly, rural region. You will be able to marvel at Gullfoss from several different platforms.

After enjoying this final site, you will be whisked back to Reykjavík to enjoy your evening.

One of the most memorable moments of my life! It was so beautiful and the guides were all so amazing and so hopefully with everything! They made sure we were fully prepared before getting in the water and we’re even super helpful while in the water!

An incredible experience you don't want to miss out on! The day went as smoothly as possible from pick up to drop off. I was picked up by Scott and met with another driver Tom at the park, who were both really friendly and informative. They gave info on the surrounding area and the snorkeling itself. Getting dressed in our thermal suits was easy compared to putting the drysuit on over top! It was -13C so as you can imagine, hands and feet were cold but Scott worked as quickly as possible to help us get suited up. Once we were ready, we walked over to the entrance and prepared our goggles and had our fins put on. We entered the water one by one and we were lucky enough to be going in the same day that the divers were having their Christmas dive - we got to see the tree they had lowered into the water as well as the Christmas music they had playing via waterproof speaker! The snorkel itself was incredible, the water is so clear and it really makes you appreciate that there is so much in life to experience. In total, we were probably in the water for 25-30 minutes. Once you get out, you have a short walk back to the vans where get help with taking your suit off and have some hot chocolate to warm up. Be sure to bring a spare change of clothes to change into after just in case it is required, or just to layer up to take the chill off. Also note that if you have longer hair it will not be tucked into the suit so when you get out, it will be frozen depending on the time of year you go! You really only need to/have room for one or two thin layers of thermals underneath so best not to wear jeans and hoodies. After the snorkel, I joined Rudi and another couple to tour the Golden Circle. Rudi was very friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable and answered any questions and shared stories along the way. I was really impressed with all of the guides and their willingness to help out all of the guests!

The snorkeling part was amazing, but the Golden Circle part was not well organized. Our tour started from the Gullfoss and ended with the snorkeling. We were given enough time at the Gullfoss and Geysir. However, there was only 40 minutes at the national park which was not able to see all the famous sight spots. The guide is a nice and funny guy. He was happy to answer all the questions. However, there was just a short introduction for each sight spot and the guide did not go with us at the sight spots except the snorkeling. To be fair, there was a situation I may need to mention. Two people in our tour, who had flights in the evening, asked to back to the town on time since the very beginning. This could have some impacts on our experience.
