The tour begins in the morning, when you are picked up from your central Reykjavík pick up point and start the scenic drive to the most interesting and popular landmarks on this route.
You will visit the iconic Gullfoss Waterfall, that has come to be a symbol of Iceland, representing its beauty and raw power. The waterfall surges in two tiers into a valley, which carves dramatically through an otherwise hilly, rural region. You will be able to marvel at Gullfoss from several different platforms.
Moving on to the Geysir Geothermal Area in Haukadalur, famed for its geysers and mud pots, you will be able to see the Strokkur geyser erupt to heights of thirty metres or so every five to ten minutes. While you wait for it to go off, you can admire the many hot springs and steaming vents that dot the area.
Other stops on the route include the Kerið crater, the Hveragerði village as well as other lesser-known sites.
The final destination on the famed Golden Circle route is Thingvellir National Park. This is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site on the Icelandic mainland because it was the original site of the world’s longest-running parliament, formed in 930 AD. Though its history is fascinating, it is the park's geology that is more likely to impress you. Thingvellir is located right between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, which are slowly pulling apart. This tension causes many ravines to open across the lava fields, which fill up with springwater travelling underground from Langjökull glacier. Silfra is one of these ravines.
After exploring the park on your own, you will head to the Silfra meeting point and have a briefing on the route you are about to take through the water. You will be helped into your snorkeling gear before your guide will take you to the entrance.
As soon as you put your face under the surface, you will see why Silfra is considered to be one of the world’s greatest snorkeling and diving sites. Due to the long filtration process through the lava, the water emerges crystal clear and perfectly clean.
The visibility exceeds 120 metres, and you can take a sip of water as you swim. The colours and geology under the water’s surface are incredible, and the journey is made easy and relaxing by a slight current pushing you along.
After the tour, you will have hot chocolate and cookies to warm up, before being driven back to Reykjavík to enjoy your evening.
