Get ready to descend beneath the surface of the Earth on this exploration of Lofthellir Cave and its stunning surroundings. Anyone daring enough to experience the underworld looking for adventure in North Iceland shouldn’t hesitate in booking this excursion now.

Your adventure begins as you get picked up from Lake Mývatn and driven along rugged mountain roads until you reach the volcano Hverfell, just east of the lake. One of Hverfell’s most distinct features is its impressive crater with steep and rocky edges, only accessible by two paths as to protect the unique landscape of the mouth.

Then, get ready to pass through the crater row Lúdentaborgir, but these lunar landscapes were utilised as a training base for astronauts of the Apollo 11 mission during the 1960s space race. After driving through the moon-like surface, you’ll reach the roots of Mt. Hvannfell and continue your excursion on foot.

You will then be facing an approximately 30-minute hike across a spectacular lava field before reaching the mouth of Lofthellir Cave. Then, prepare to get down on all fours and enter through the cave’s narrow mouth to find a whole new world waiting for you inside.

The 3,500-year-old lava cave stretches 370 metres underneath the ground and the natural ice sculptures within are renowned for being the most impressive in all of Iceland. The cave is dark and full of wonders, but you will be well equipped with a helmet, headlight and crampons provided by your guide.

As you explore the cave’s mystic underworld, get ready to behold glistening rock formations and droplets of lava stone amongst the jagged ice needles that are scattered across the cave. If you bring your camera, remember to turn on the flash to capture a netherworld unlike any other.

Don’t miss out on this incredible opportunity to explore an authentic lava cave in North Iceland. Check availability by choosing a date.
