Wilderness Lava Walk | Hiking the Krafla Lava Fields

Hike across the unique, haunting and dramatic Krafla lava fields, and witness firsthand Iceland’s raw volcanism. This excursion should appeal to those fascinated with Iceland’s diverse nature, as well as any who love hiking.

This tour will start when you are picked up in a van from Akureyri; there are a limited number of seats so you can be guaranteed a small group. From there, you will head east to the Lake Mývatn area.

This area is renowned for its beautiful vistas and diverse landscapes, and your guide will stop at certain sites for you to get some photos. The main destination, however, is the Krafla lava fields.

Krafla is a highly volcanic area, having gone off 29 times in recorded history; during the eruptions in the 18th Century, its lava fountains were so great that they could be seen hundreds of kilometres away on Iceland’s South Coast. The lava you will be walking on came from the last eruptions, which lasted from 1975 to 1984.

Because of its volatility, Krafla has shaped not only the nature of the entire region but the lives of everyone living in the area.

Your guide will tell you all about this as you start to hike and point out the different features surrounding you. Expect to see bizarre geological formations, coloured strangely by the elements of the earth, of all different textures, from coarse to completely smooth. Because of the rough terrain, you will take it nice and easy, allowing you to enjoy your incredible surroundings without tiring out.

After an enjoyable, fascinating hike, which will include a visit to the Víti explosion crater, you will return to your van and head back to Akureyri. En route, however, you will make one more stop at the magnificent Goðafoss waterfall. Named ‘the waterfall of the gods’, it was here that early Icelandic converts to Christianity threw all of their icons of the Norse deities into the rapids, marking a turning point in the country’s previously pagan history.

See Goðafoss, Lake Mývatn, and hike the incredible lava fields of Krafla on this immersive day tour. Check availability by choosing a date.
