Day 1
On this hiking tour, you can soothe sore muscles with a soak in geothermal waters of a hot tub

Welcome

You'll be picked up in the eastern town of Egilsstaðir and driven through the beautiful Hallormsstaður forest where you'll stop at the national park visitor's centre in Fljótsdalur.

You'll then continue a little further by car before you reach the starting point of Fossaleið trail, a beautiful track that will lead you to your accommodation.

You will not have to hike to the country hostel with your luggage, as it will be transported to your accommodations for you and will be waiting there for your arrival.

The 15-kilometre hike to the hostel is scenic, and you will pass many waterfalls. You'll be travelling for about 6 hours today, with the elevation of 500 metres. When you arrive at the hostel, you'll have some time to settle in and prepare for the days ahead before the welcome dinner.

Day 2
Víti Crater is located near Askja Caldera and the Öskjuvatn Lake in the remote Icelandic Highlands

Askja Caldera

On this day you will visit the famous Askja Caldera, located in a remote part of Highlands. You'll be hiking 8 kilometres with a 300-metre elevation today, which will take around 4 hours.

After an early breakfast, it is time to leave the highland hostel and head for Kárahnúkar dam. You will then cross the Brúardalir valley on your way to the Askja area.

After a lunch break in the Dreki hut, you will take a short hike into the dramatic Drekagil canyon, a must-see for all visiting this area. From there, it is only a quick drive and a short walk to the beautiful Askja Caldera and the magnificent Víti crater.

Víti is filled with warm, geothermal water which is rich in minerals, and swimming in this caldera is highly recommended. The minerals are said to do wonders for your skin.

You will then return to the highland hostel in time for dinner. If you like to take another dip today, you can soak in the hostel's hot tub and relax after a day of hiking.

Day 3
The Icelandic Highlands are filled with majestic canyons like Hafrahvammar

Canyons, Warm Waterfalls & Departure

On your final day in the highlands, you will visit the Hafrahvammar canyon. Today's 10-kilometre, 400-metre elevation hike is fascinating and will take you along the canyon or through it, if the season allows, as it has only been available for a few years to follow the canyon's riverbed.

On this 6-hour hike, you' ll see all kinds of incredible rock formations and you might even spot a magnificent falcon along the way.

After the hike, you'll stop at Laugavalladalur, a valley with a geothermal stream. You'll be able to take a warm shower in the stream's waterfall before heading back to Egilsstaðir where you will bid farewell to your tour guides.
