Spend a night in unspoilt nature and experience the stunning beauty of the private island of Traustholtshólmi. Taste fresh salmon from the river, sit around the firepit and enjoy life far away from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
The island is untouched by any modern development and is economically self-sustained, so this is the perfect off-the-grid experience. The only building on the island is an old, renovated stone hut, but you will stay in a specially made Mongolian yurt. It will give your stay an adventurous feel even though all amenities are on hand to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
The island's only inhabitants, Hákon and his sheepdog Skuggi, will be your guides. They will welcome you as they ferry you across the river to enter this green paradise. Since boyhood, Hákon has spent his summers on the island and he is now offering you to partake in the relaxing island life.
After settling in your yurt, you will get a chance to explore the area. Hákon will then take you to the shores to check the fishing net, to see if your dinner has been caught. The first thing on the menu will be salmon sashimi, freshly caught, with soy or lemon.
Hákon will lead you on a short walk around the island, recounting its history, telling tales of life on the island and of the land that surrounds you, from early settlement to modernity. During the walk, you'll help prepare for dinner by picking herbs and vegetables fresh from the ground.
When you return to camp, a bonfire will be lit, and your dinner of local vegetables and the newly caught salmon seasoned with wild herbs from the island will be served. Nothing beats eating out under the open sky, except perhaps eating inside a Mongolian yurt, if the sky turns unfavourable. Sweet treats and coffee will follow, along with stories by the fire and stargazing.
On dark nights in the autumn, the northern lights might make an appearance as you sit outside by the crackling firepit. During the summer, you will be surrounded by the midnight sun, listening to the gentle evening songs of birds before turning in for the night in your comfortable and spacious yurt.
Get in touch with nature and enjoy life on this overnight stay at Traustholtshólmi island. Check availability by choosing a date.
If you plan to stay longer than one night, Hákon will ferry you to and from the mainland when you need it. The island is very close to all main attractions, so day tours from the island are ideal.
There are three yurts available, separated by a good distance so that the guests will have their privacy. The yurts sleep two adults each and can additionally accommodate two children on mattresses. Guests can choose to rent one private yurt or all three for exceptional privacy and seclusion.
