Combine snorkelling and horse-riding on this action-packed day tour. This excursion should not be missed by those who are eager to actively immerse themselves in Iceland’s nature.
You’ll be picked up from downtown Reykjavík in the morning, and your guides will drive you to Þingvellir National Park, where your snorkel will be conducted. Þingvellir is the original site of the world’s longest-running, ongoing parliament, but better famed for its dramatic geology.
The North American and Eurasian tectonic plates visibly frame the park, and the tension caused by the way in which they pull apart has torn many ravines and fissures through the landscapes in the area. These fissures fill with spring water, as the lava fields of Þingvellir have a lot of groundwater travelling from Langjökull glacier.
Due to the underground filtration process, the water that emerges in the fissures is so clean that it is drinkable and so clear that you can see for over 120 metres.
Before exploring the ethereal underwater world in one of these fissures, Silfra, your guides will tell you about the route, safety, and equipment. After gearing up, you’ll be escorted to the entrance and assisted into the blue.
Throughout the forty minutes or so that you spend in the water, you will be left with no illusions as to why Silfra is considered one of the world’s best snorkelling and diving locations. The scale, colouration and clarity combine to make this an incredible underwater experience that you will never forget.
You’ll warm up after the tour with hot chocolate and cookies, before travelling back along the route you came to the valley of Mosfellsdalur, where your horses are waiting. Again, you’ll get a quick safety briefing and be provided with the necessary equipment, before meeting your steeds.
Icelandic horses are incredibly special creatures. They are much friendlier, more sociable and smarter than other breeds, as well as being notably smaller. Their size and disposition make them perfect for beginners, although more experienced riders will be more than content and able to try out the unique gait, the 'tölt', that only Icelandic horses have.
You’ll be paired with a horse that suits your experience, before setting out into Mosfellsdalur. There are beautiful rivers, towering mountains, and verdant country to explore here, and there is no better way to do it than by horseback.
After an enjoyable ride, you’ll return to your van, and be taken back to Reykjavík.
