Daily itinerary

Day 1 - The Golden Circle

One part of the Golden Circle, the waterfall Gullfoss plummets 32 metres in two stages into a rugged canyon

You will have an early morning pickup by your guide and driver at your accommodation. You'll leave the capital, heading east and the day is devoted to seeing the famous Golden Circle which includes Þingvellir National Park, Geysir geothermal area and Gullfoss waterfall.

The first stop is the National Park of Þingvellir, which is a UNESCO site, and one of the very few places in the world where you can see the mid-Atlantic ridge on land. You'll walk along the faults and fissures of the area that make evident the rifting of earth's crust. You'll see where the Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates are moving apart, forming the landscape in the national park and surrounding area. Þingvellir is also the place where Alþingi, Iceland’s parliament was founded in the year 930 AD.

You'll continue towards Geysir geothermal area and witness the spouting hot spring Strokkur erupt up to 30 meters high. You'll also see the hot spring Geysir, which is the reason for the English word 'geyser'. Close by, the majestic Gullfoss waterfall where the water plummets down 32 meters in two stages into a rugged canyon whose walls reach up to 70 meters in height.

Continuing your tour, you'll be driven along the scenic South Coast to a your hotel, Fosshótel Núpar. In the evening, you will go hunting for northern lights where your guide will follow the forecast, trying to find the best place to spot the lights, hoping they will make an appearance tonight.

Day 2 - Icebergs and ice caves

In the winter, you can take an ice cave tour in Vatnajökull National Park

Today you'll head further east, towards Europe’s largest glacier Vatnajökull. Your first stop will be at the renowned glacier lagoon Jökulsárlón which is filled with huge floating icebergs that have fallen off from the outlet glacier Breiðamerkurjökull.

The lagoon has been a setting for a few Hollywood movies, including James Bond: Die Another Day, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Batman Begins, among others.

The size of the lagoon has grown very much in the recent years due to the melting of the glacier, and it’s amazing to imagine that the part of the iceberg you can see standing up from the water is only 10% of the iceberg’s actual size. Close to the lagoon you can see the Diamond Beach where the icebergs from the lagoon appear as diamonds on the black sand.

After having admired this spectacle, you will head to Svínafellsjökull, an outlet glacier of Vatnajökull where you will put on crampons and go for an ice cave tour and a glacier walk.

In the late afternoon, you will return to your hotel where the evening will be spent northern light hunting if the weather permits.

Day 3 - Black sand beaches and waterfalls

Iceland's South Coast is filled with natural wonders like black sand beaches and cascading waterfalls

On your journey back to Reykjavík, you will stop and enjoy the picturesque landscape of the South Coast, starting with a stroll along the black beaches of Vík and Reynisfjara. The waves at Reynisfjara have shown themselves to be quite dangerous as they often push further up the beach than many would expect, so pay attention to your guide’s instructions.

From Reynisfjara you can see Reynisdrangar, rock figures close to the shoreline. According to an Icelandic folklore, these massive basalt columns were once trolls trying to pull ships from the ocean, but they were struck by the first rays of the sun and thus turned to stone.

Afterwards, you will experience an exciting glacier walk on Sólheimajökull glacier and then take a close look at the beautiful waterfalls Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss before returning to Reykjavík in the late afternoon.
