This historic location is where Icelanders founded the world's first and longest-running representative parliament, converted to Christianity in 1000 AD, and declared their independence from Denmark in 1944. It is also located in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, and is the best place in the world to see this incredible geological feature.
From Þingvellir, we head to the Geysir geothermal area, passing through the charming village of Laugarvatn. This is a beautiful site, with bubbling hot springs, and two geysers. The one which gave all others their name, Geysir itself, is largely inactive these days, but the other geyser Strokkur goes off every five to ten minutes, and hurls water up to 30 m into the air.
A few minutes down the road from the Geysir Geothermal Area is the magnificent Gullfoss. This incredible waterfall has two dramatic drops into an ancient valley and is 32 m tall from the top of the highest falls to the bottom of the lowest. It is one of the most impressive, easily accessible waterfalls in the country.
After Gullfoss, we will stop at Faxi a small waterfall between Gullfoss and Reykholt as an option we can stop at a tomato farm friðheimar for lunch
we continue away from the masses and go off the beaten track drive passed Flúðir and drive up Þjórsárdalur to Hjálparfoss,
Hjálparfoss waterfall. Situated in the lava field north of the stratovolcano Hekla, this is a twin cascade where two streams from the river Fossá, merge in the basin of the waterfall.
we will drive north on a gravel road to a little hidden paradise called Gjáin absolutely amazing place.
