New Years Eve has deep ties to Icelandic folklore.

Enjoy one of the most spectacular firework shows on earth in a beautiful location this New Years Eve. This opportunity should not be missed by those who want to witness an unreal display to say goodbye to the last year and to usher in the new.

At the beginning of this tour, you’ll be picked up in a minibus with a small group, and will be driven to three different bonfires in Reykjavík. At each, you can expect hundreds of Icelanders celebrating, playing music and singing songs. Many will be in traditional regalia, and many more setting off some early fireworks, giving a hint of what is to come.

As you enjoy the festivities at each, your friendly, local guide will tell you about the Christmas and New Year customs, such as the food that is eaten and the associated folklore. New Years Eve, for example, is said to be the day that the Hidden People, or Icelandic Elves, move house, and are most often seen on Iceland’s lonely roads.

When it comes close to midnight, your guide will take you to a very special viewing location in the city where you will have a perfect view of the whole skyline. When the clock strikes twelve, prepare for the show of your life.

In the buildup to New Year, Icelanders all over the country, from all backgrounds, stock up on fireworks, buying them from the rescue teams that sell them to raise funds. In Reykjavík, therefore, tens of thousands of households will have each bought dozens of fireworks. When they set them off, it is in a random display that sets the entire sky alight.

You’ll toast the New Year beneath a canopy of colour, enjoy the incredible show, then be escorted back towards your accommodation (or to the bars, if your night is just beginning).

Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to see one of the world’s best firework shows. Check availability by choosing a date.
