Come and join us and experience old fashioned sailing while getting in touch with the wild nature in Skjálfandi bay by the town of Húsavík. For the past 15 years, our Whales, Puffins & Sails tour has been one of the top choices by our customers.
This tour really has it all. It combines our favourite activities in Iceland, whale- and puffin watching and of course, sailing. We want you to get the feeling of old days by stepping on board one of our traditional schooners and experience a great sailing adventure surrounded by the beautiful scenery that Skjálfandi bay has to offer.
The tour starts in North Sailing‘s sales office in Húsavík. With the boarding pass in your hands you can step on board one of our schooners, Haukur or Hildur. Both Haukur and Hildur are former fishing boats that were renovated and turned into beautiful whale watching boats by the North Sailing team.
After being welcomed on board, our experienced crew will provide you with warm overalls that will keep you warm for the next four hours. As we head out to the bay our guide will inform you about the area while on the look out for whales and puffins. Ahead is a four-hour sailing while exploring whales and puffins in their natural habitat.
Skjálfandi bay is a bay full of life. When scheduled whale watching tours started in Húsavík the Minke whale was the most common whale to visit the bay. That has changed over the years and now, more than two decades later, the Humpback whale is the most commonly sighted whale species. We are also so lucky to be greeted by the great Blue whale, even Orcas, Fin whales, Sei whales and Northern Bottlenose whales, depending on the season. The White-beaked dolphins and Harbour porpoises are frequent visitors as well. The feeding conditions in the bay seem to be great but the whales are on the look out for krill and plankton.
This tour is a popular choice so choose your preferred date and time and join us on this great sailing adventure. Hop on board and feel the breeze as you go to meet the whales! Check the booking availability by choosing a date.
It can be cold out at sea so make sure to bring warm clothes. We want to ask that you arrive at our ticket office about half an hour prior to departure to collect your boarding pass. The ticket office is a glass building located in the center of Húsavík, opposite the church. A public parking lot is located behind the church.
