On the way to your accommodation in the southern town of Hvolsvöllur, you will stop for lunch and also do some sightseeing to give you a sense of what Iceland is about.
Depending on your flight and departure location, you might arrive early to Hvolsvöllur. A highly recommended activity in the town is a visit to the Lava Centre, which is just a few minutes walk from your accommodation.
You'll be staying at Midgard Base Camp, located in the heart of south Iceland. In the evening, you'll enjoy an Icelandic dinner with the rest of your tour group where you can all get to know each other. After the meal, you'll either go on a short evening hike or relax in the rooftop hot tub and sauna before going to bed.
In the afternoon you'll visit Sólheimajökull, an outlet glacier of the larger Mýrdalsjökull. Your guide will tell you all about the ongoing changes the of the ice cap due to Iceland's active environment. To give you an even better introduction of the glacier, you'll put on crampons and take on a short hike on top of the ancient ice.
You'll return to the Base Camp in the afternoon where you'll be free to spend the rest of the day as you please. You could visit the local swimming pool; it is the best way to unwind after an active day. The pool area consists of a warm-water outdoor pool, hot tubs and a sauna.
After dinner, if you are not too tired, you could go for an evening bike ride. However, you could also choose to spend the last hours of the day at the Base Camp where you can share stories with your group while having a drink at the bar.
You'll board a massive super jeep, a custom vehicle built to handle the Highland's rough roads and on your way inside the valley; you will explore the surroundings of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull, the one that erupted in 2010. You'll stop by the outlet glacier, Gígjökull where the eruption first presented itself.
If the group is willing, you will hike around the Þórsmörk valley for a while before returning back to the Base Camp for dinner. In the evening you could go on a hike, chill in the rooftop hot tub or visit the swimming pool or Lava Centre.
Mother Nature is in control of today's itinerary. You might take a hike through the Reykjadalur valley, a geothermal area where you can take a dip in a warm river. However, if the weather is not suitable for a hike, you could visit the Þjórsárdalur valley, the Golden Circle or something entirely different. Whatever you do today, it promises to be filled with both fun and adventure.
At the end of the day, you will be driven to either Keflavík International Airport or Reykjavík. If you are flying home on this day, your flight should depart at 7:00 PM or later.
