Marvel over the iconic sites of the Golden Circle on this day tour, and break up your sightseeing with a dip in the Fontana Spa in the town of Laugarvatn. This tour should not be missed by any who want to see all the major destinations of Iceland’s South while making the most of the country’s renowned geothermal activity.

Your day will begin when you are picked up in Reykjavík. From the capital, you’ll head straight to the first destination on the Golden Circle. This is the UNESCO World Heritage Site and the National Park of Þingvellir.

Þingvellir is where the country’s first parliament was founded over a millennium ago by early settlers. It is also directly between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, which are pulling apart, leading to beautiful and dramatic geology and scenery.

Following this, you will head into Haukadalur Valley, where the Geysir Geothermal Area seethes and steams. Here is Iceland’s most famous geyser, Strokkur, which is renowned for its regularity and height, blasting up boiling water at least every ten minutes.

The final site of the Golden Circle you will enjoy is Gullfoss Waterfall. Tumbling in two tiers into a glacial canyon, you can stand on its edge and feel the spray from the cascade against your face. At over 32 m (104 ft) tall, it is the greatest and most powerful falls on the Hvíta River.

Either before seeing Strokkur or else after Gullfoss, depending on the conditions of the day, you will head to the Fontana Spa in the town of Laugarvatn. This lovely pool, complete with steam rooms, is a wonderful place to relax and unwind.

You can even wade into the nearby Laugarvatn lake, where warm water rises from the bed. You are also welcome to have some local food at the on-site café.

After a relaxing yet exciting day, you’ll return to Reykjavík.

Good to know:

Great, basic tour. Wish we had more time at Fontana. They ran out of towels, so we had to wait a bit for bathrobes. Better to bring your own towels if space permits.

Had a great time! Would definitely recommend this tour!
