Hop on this super jeep excursion to the Highlands for an unforgettable adventure out in the wildest natural landscapes of Iceland. Visiting both the volcano Hekla and the geothermal area Landmannalaugar, this tour is not to be missed by anyone keen on experiencing the majestic Highlands on an easy day tour from Reykjavík.

Your journey begins as you get picked up in the capital, where you will meet your friendly local guide and board the modified vehicle capable of handling Iceland’s mountain roads. Then, prepare to drive through the fertile farmlands of South Iceland before reaching the island’s most famous and feared volcano, Hekla.

This magnificent caldera has erupted approximately twenty times since the country was settled, ergo it has gained the reputation of being the gateway to hell. Driving up the slopes of this awe-inspiring monster, you’ll hopefully be able to reach its snowy peak for an unparalleled view from the top.

Then, you’ll board the super jeep again to continue your route, noticing the extreme changes in the landscape as you drive straight up to the edge of Hekla’s youngest lava field, formed during its last eruption in the year 2000.

If conditions allow, you’ll also drive along the volcano’s ridge, which sits 900 metres above sea level, providing for amazing views. At the mountain’s base, you’ll pass through rugged mountain terrain, past more lava fields and explosion craters.

Then, it’s time to head to the central Highlands, swinging by the stunning crater lake Ljótipollur for a lunch break, before reaching the geothermal wonderland that is Landmannalaugar. Once there, you’ll have the opportunity to either go hiking along one of the area’s magical hiking trails or soak in a natural geothermal hot spring to unwind after your adventure.

As you leave Landmannalaugar behind, you’ll advance down the beautiful valley Þjórsárdalur, your last stop being the waterfall Hjálparfoss. The double cascade of the falls nests in the middle of one of Hekla’s many lava fields and the basin is nearly perfectly circular, making for a picturesque display and fantastic photo opportunities.

Finally, you’ll return to Reykjavík City in the evening, knowing that you just saw some of Iceland’s most magnificent Highland attractions in just one, adventure-packed day. Book this trip now and make the most out of your stay. Check availability by choosing a date.
