Description
The spouting geysers, enormous waterfalls and historical sites on the golden circle make this day tour a must-visit for every traveller in Iceland. On this tour, you will have the chance to add a magnificent ATV ride to it for an unforgettable day around the south of Iceland.
Your tour will start from our centrally located Reykjavik terminal; you can either meet up with the host of the tour there or add a convenient hotel pick up from your accommodation that commences before the stated departure time.
The tour is both live guided in English. There will also be a GPS located audio guide on board that guides you in ten different languages as the bus enters pre-set locations. Together the audio guide and the live guide give you detailed information throughout the day.
The tour starts with a beautiful drive towards Þingvellir national park. This UNESCO listed site is home to the oldest parliament in the world which was founded in the year 930 AD. Your guide will lead you through the park with an easy walk where you will be able to see the historical sites and also the world-famous rift valley. The rift valley is formed by two tectonic plates that are constantly pulling apart every day. After the guided walk, your bus picks the group up from another location, a few hundred meters away from the starting point of the walk.
From Þingvellir a scenic drive over Lyngdalsheiðis awaits before you reach your next destination, Geysir geothermal area. At Geysir geothermal is the ever erupting Strokkur geyser. Strokkur geyser is one of the most famous geysers in the world and erupts every 10 minutes, sending boiling water 15-20 meters high.
At the Geysir geothermal area, you will have the chance to grab lunch, or you can wait for the next stop, Gullfoss waterfall.
Gullfoss waterfall is the last main sight on this tour. The waterfall is located in a narrow canyon in Hvítá (the white river). The glacier water cascades down 32 meters in two steps before hitting the bottom of the canyon, spraying mist all over.
On a sunny day, this mist turns into beautiful rainbows that make this waterfall an iconic site, engraved in everyone’s memory after visiting.
From Gullfoss the tour heads south, driving through farmlands and mountains before reaching the town of Hveragerði, the town is most known for its agriculture and geothermal activity. At Hveragerði you will meet up with your ATV guide that takes you onwards to the black sand beach, located at the shore of Þorlákshöfn.
After a safety briefing and a quick lesson on how to operate an ATV, you rush off for an exhilarating drive along the Atlantic Ocean coastline.
The day ends with a drive to Reykjavik where you ATV operator will drop you off safe and sound to your accommodation.
